Veterinary Assistant
Position: Veterinary Assistant – Sheep Farm Department: Veterinary / Livestock Location: Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE Employment Type: Full-Time Reporting To: Farm Manager Job Summary We are looking for a responsible and hardworking Veterinary Assistant to support the Veterinarian in maintaining the health, welfare, and productivity of sheep on the farm. The Veterinary Assistant will assist with routine veterinary activities, animal handling, vaccination, medication, disease prevention, treatment procedures, health monitoring, and maintaining accurate animal health records. The candidate must be comfortable working directly with sheep in a farm environment and should have good knowledge of basic livestock handling and animal husbandry. Key Responsibilities Assist the Veterinarian during daily examination and treatment of sheep. Safely catch, restrain, move, and handle sheep during examinations and veterinary procedures. Monitor sheep daily for signs of illness, injury, abnormal behavior, poor appetite, lameness, respiratory problems, diarrhea, or other health concerns. Immediately report sick, injured, or abnormal animals to the Veterinarian. Assist with vaccination and deworming programs under the direction of the Veterinarian. Assist with administering prescribed medications and treatments as instructed by the Veterinarian. Assist in collecting blood, fecal, swab, and other samples when required. Assist with wound cleaning, dressing, basic first aid, and post-treatment care as directed. Support the Veterinarian during emergency cases and routine veterinary procedures. Assist with lambing and provide appropriate care to newborn lambs under veterinary supervision. Monitor pregnant and recently delivered ewes and report any complications. Assist with identification and isolation of sick or suspected infectious animals. Support disease prevention, biosecurity, quarantine, and farm hygiene procedures. Clean and disinfect veterinary equipment, treatment areas, pens, and other work areas. Properly handle and maintain veterinary equipment, medicines, vaccines, and supplies. Check veterinary medicine and consumable stock and report shortages or expired items. Maintain accurate records of vaccinations, treatments, medications, animal health observations, and mortality. Assist in maintaining individual or group animal health records. Support regular sheep health checks, weighing, tagging, and identification activities. Assist with routine sheep husbandry activities when required. Ensure proper handling and welfare of sheep at all times. Follow farm safety, animal welfare, hygiene, and biosecurity procedures. Assist the Veterinarian in implementing herd/flock health programs. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the veterinary store and treatment area. Perform other duties related to animal health and farm operations as assigned by the Veterinarian or Farm Manager. Qualifications & Experience Diploma, certificate, or training in Veterinary Assistance, Animal Health, Animal Husbandry, Livestock Management, or a related field is preferred. Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a sheep, goat, livestock farm, veterinary clinic, or similar animal-care environment. Hands-on experience with sheep and goats is highly preferred. Basic knowledge of sheep diseases, vaccination, deworming, medication, and animal husbandry. Experience in handling sheep safely is an advantage. Knowledge of lambing and newborn lamb care is preferred. Ability to work under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian. Physically fit and able to work outdoors and handle livestock. Willingness to work in farm conditions, including weekends and public holidays when required. Good observation and communication skills. Ability to maintain accurate records and follow veterinary instructions. Basic English communication skills are preferred; knowledge of Arabic or Hindi/Urdu is an advantage.
