Transportation & Fleet Manager – Multi-State Operations

As Steeler continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Transportation & Fleet Manager to oversee our vehicles, equipment, drivers, and transportation compliance across our West Coast branch operations. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who understands multi-state DOT requirements, fleet maintenance, driver safety, and the operational demands of delivering construction materials safely and on schedule. What You’ll Do Oversee the safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective operation of Steeler’s fleet across multiple branch locations. Develop and maintain preventive-maintenance schedules for trucks, trailers, forklifts, and other company vehicles and equipment. Monitor vehicle and equipment condition, maintenance history, mileage, downtime, and repair costs. Coordinate repairs with branch personnel, outside vendors, dealerships, and service providers. Maintain driver qualification files, certifications, training records, medical cards, motor vehicle records, and other required documentation. Monitor compliance with applicable DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, state, and company safety requirements. Oversee driver compliance with hours-of-service, electronic logging, vehicle inspection, and recordkeeping requirements. Maintain vehicle registrations, permits, titles, renewals, and new-vehicle documentation. Support applicable fuel-tax, apportioned-registration, and permitting requirements. Review driver vehicle inspection reports and ensure identified safety or maintenance issues are corrected promptly. Develop and deliver driver safety programs, policies, and training. Monitor preventable accidents, citations, roadside inspections, and compliance trends. Lead or support vehicle accident investigations, insurance claims, and corrective-action processes. Track fleet performance using Samsara or another fleet and asset-management system. Develop fleet budgets and monitor fuel, maintenance, repair, insurance, and replacement costs. Evaluate vehicle age, mileage, maintenance expense, utilization, and depreciation to recommend repairs, replacements, purchases, or disposals. Establish consistent fleet procedures and maintenance standards across all branch locations. Build and maintain productive relationships with transportation vendors, repair providers, insurers, and regulatory partners. Partner with branch managers to address operational issues, improve communication, and minimize vehicle downtime. Prepare fleet reports and provide leadership with recommendations related to safety, compliance, utilization, and cost control. Remain current on changes to transportation laws and regulations affecting company vehicles and drivers. Required Qualifications At least five years of fleet or transportation management experience. At least five years of experience working with DOT requirements and commercial-vehicle compliance. Experience supporting fleet operations across multiple states or locations. Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations, driver qualification requirements, hours-of-service rules, vehicle inspections, and transportation recordkeeping. Experience coordinating preventive maintenance and repairs for commercial vehicles and heavy equipment. Experience managing vehicle registrations, permits, renewals, and related documentation. Proficiency with fleet, telematics, or asset-management software. Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate maintenance costs, vehicle utilization, and replacement needs. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with drivers, branch managers, vendors, and company leadership. Strong organizational skills with careful attention to documentation, deadlines, and regulatory requirements. Ability to respond to urgent vehicle, driver, or operational issues as needed. Ability to work on-site at Steeler’s Seattle location and travel to branch locations. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Samsara or a similar fleet-management and telematics platform. Experience managing a fleet used in construction-material delivery, manufacturing, distribution, or building-supply operations. Knowledge of trucks, trailers, forklifts, and heavy-equipment maintenance. Experience supervising or training commercial drivers. Experience with accident investigation, insurance claims, and post-accident procedures. Experience developing fleet budgets and vehicle-replacement plans. CDL or previous commercial-driving experience. Formal training or certification in fleet management, transportation safety, or DOT compliance. Compensation and Benefits The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000 per year. The final salary will be determined based on job-related experience, qualifications, skills, and internal equity. The following benefits are offered to eligible employees: Medical, dental, and vision insurance: Available to eligible full-time employees. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following the employee's date of hire. Life insurance: Company-paid life insurance coverage of up to $50,000 is available to eligible full-time employees. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following the employee's date of hire. Paid vacation: Paid vacation accrues at a rate equivalent to one week during the first year of employment and two weeks annually beginning with the second year of employment. Paid sick leave: Paid sick leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked, in accordance with applicable Washington State and Seattle paid sick and safe time laws. Paid holidays: Eight paid holidays plus one floating holiday per year. Parental leave: Steeler does not currently offer a separate employer-paid parental-leave benefit. Eligible employees may apply for benefits through Washington's Paid Family and Medical Leave program. 401(k) retirement plan: Available to eligible employees after 60 days of employment. Steeler matches eligible employee contributions up to 4%. Other compensation: No performance-based bonus, commission, profit-sharing, stock options, or other additional compensation is currently offered for this position. Physical and Travel Requirements Ability to inspect vehicles and equipment at branch and service locations. Ability to work in office, warehouse, yard, and shop environments. Ability to travel regularly to Steeler branch locations. A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required if operating a company vehicle and traveling between locations are essential functions of this position.
