Town Accountant Town of Holden, Massachusetts The Town of Holden is looking for a Town Accountant who is ready to modernize how our municipal finance operations run. About the Role Under the general direction of the Town Manager, the Town Accountant plans, organizes, directs, and oversees all municipal accounting operations, serving as the Town’s principal financial control officer and maintaining sound fiscal management practices in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, GASB standards, and Town policies. The position supervises a full-time Assistant Accountant and Accounting Clerk. What You'll Do Oversee the general ledger, subsidiary ledgers, chart of accounts, and monthly financial reporting within the Town’s financial management software, in conformance with UMAS Prepare trial balances, balance sheets, income statements, and required state filings, including free cash certification, Schedule A, the annual Tax Rate Recapitulation Sheet, and other DLS Gateway submissions Maintain departmental budget records and monitor actual expenditures against approved budgets Partner with the Town Manager and Finance Committee on the annual budget and Town Meeting process Review and process bills, purchase orders, payrolls, and warrants for payment Maintain internal controls, data security safeguards, and disaster recovery procedures; ensure compliance with GASB pronouncements, including OPEB reporting, fiduciary activities, lease accounting, and subscription-based technology arrangements Coordinate the Town’s annual independent financial statement audit Administer compliance and reporting for federal and state grants, and process Chapter 90 and other reimbursement requests Support debt management functions, including debt service schedules and bond/note documentation What You Bring Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field, plus 3–5 years of related municipal accounting experience Extensive knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws relating to municipal finance, GASB standards, and UMAS Proficiency with municipal financial management software (such as Munis/Tyler Technologies or VADAR) and standard office software Strong planning, organizational, and supervisory skills Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships across a wide variety of constituencies CGA, CPA, or CGFM certification preferred; knowledge of federal grant compliance (Uniform Guidance, Single Audit Act) a plus Compensation & Schedule Salary: $135,000+, depending on qualifications Hours: 35 hours/week (Mon, Wed, Thurs: 8–4; Tues: 8–5; Fri: 8–12) Benefits: Vacation, sick, and personal time; Worcester Regional Retirement System; Health, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance; 12 paid holidays per year.
