Team Lead Quality Assurance
1. Team Leadership · Lead, mentor, and develop a team of QA Engineers across varying levels of seniority cultivating a culture of quality ownership, continuous learning, and shared accountability for the reliability, security, and accuracy of a critical payment product where errors carry real financial consequences. · Conduct structured regular 1:1s to provide ongoing coaching, candid feedback, and career guidance that goes beyond task review actively investing in each team member's professional trajectory. Lead formal performance reviews with objectivity and fairness, and co-create personalised development plans that align individual ambitions with the evolving skill demands of the organisation’s business value. · Proactively identify and address skill gaps within the team whether in manual testing, test automation, API and backend testing, performance engineering, security testing, or fleet domain knowledge and champion targeted upskilling through structured training programmes, peer mentoring, external certifications, or deliberate stretch assignments on high-complexity payment scenarios. · Assist in allocating QA resources strategically and dynamically across concurrent projects, releases, and regression cycles, balancing individual workloads against delivery timelines, test complexity, risk profiles and each engineer's growth objectives. · Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe team environment where engineers feel empowered to raise quality concerns, challenge assumptions, and advocate for the end user. 2. QA Strategy & Test Planning · Own and drive the end-to-end QA strategy across the organisation defining testing standards, risk-based coverage expectations, entry and exit criteria, and quality gates for all stages of the software delivery pipeline, with particular emphasis on zero-tolerance thresholds for critical payment processing failures, incorrect billing, and card authorisation errors. · Develop comprehensive test plans and test strategies for all major product releases covering the full spectrum of testing types including functional, regression, integration, end-to-end transaction flow, performance under peak fleet usage, user acceptance, and compliance testing ensuring that every release is production-ready. · Design and maintain a robust end-to-end test coverage model that maps every critical payment journey from a driver swiping a fleet card at a fuel station through to transaction posting, invoice generation, and reconciliation ensuring no edge case or failure mode is left untested, particularly those with direct financial or compliance implications. · Develop and maintain a dedicated payment-specific regression suite that covers high-frequency, high-risk scenarios such as duplicate transaction prevention, partial authorisation handling, offline transaction processing, card velocity limits, ensuring that no regression is introduced with each new release cycle. 3 . Stakeholder Management · Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted quality authority for all QA-related matters across product, engineering, operations, compliance, customer success, and senior leadership. · Communicate test progress, quality metrics, defect summaries, risk assessments, and release readiness status clearly, consistently, and confidently to both technical and non-technical audiences equipping leadership with the evidence they need to make informed, timely, and defensible go/no-go release decisions. · Partner proactively and closely with Business Analysts, Project Managers, Solution Consultants, and Developers to ensure that all requirements are testable, acceptance criteria are unambiguous and measurable, and quality expectations particularly around payment accuracy, card authorisation success rates, and transaction latency are explicitly agreed upon and documented. · Manage stakeholder expectations around defect prioritisation, acceptable risk thresholds, and release trade-offs with transparency and commercial awareness facilitating constructive, data-backed conversations that honestly articulate the risk of shipping with known defects versus the cost of delaying a release, particularly in meeting the SLA’s. 4 . Process, Tools & Delivery · Define, implement, and continuously refine QA frameworks, methodologies, processes, templates, and best practice guidelines that drive consistency, repeatability, and measurable efficiency across the entire QA function. · Build and maintain a robust payment simulation and test data management strategy including synthetic card profiles, simulated merchant environments, virtual POS terminals, and test transaction generators to enable thorough testing of payment scenarios without relying on live production data or incurring real financial transactions during test cycles. · Establish, track, and report on a comprehensive set of QA performance indicators including defect escape rates, defect density by value chain, test coverage percentages, re-open rates, and payment-specific metrics such as authorisation error rates, settlement discrepancy counts, and false decline rates — using this data to drive meaningful, evidence-based process improvements. · Lead the evaluation, selection, and adoption of QA tools and platforms that enhance team productivity, test visibility, and cross-functional transparency ensuring the team is always equipped with the right tooling for the complexity of what they are testing. · Facilitate structured retrospectives, post-release quality reviews, and defect trend analyses to systematically capture lessons learned, identify recurring failure patterns in payment processing or integration points, and embed targeted improvements into future delivery cycles — building a progressively more resilient and mature QA practice over time. 5 . Strategic Contribution · Play an active, visible, and influential role in release planning, product roadmap discussions, and technology investment decisions. · Partner with other department’s leadership to define and execute the strategic direction of the QA function including headcount and capability planning, tooling investments, and the continuous evolution of testing practices as the fleet card payment platform grows in transaction volume, geographic reach, merchant network size, and product complexity. · Contribute meaningfully to pre-sales engagements, enterprise client onboarding, and RFP responses. · Serve as an internal thought leader and subject matter expert on quality in the payments domain, contributing to communities of practice, internal knowledge bases, and cross-functional forums — elevating the organisation's collective understanding of what it means to build, test, and maintain a payment product that fleet operators and corporate clients can rely on.
