Tax Accountant — Small CPA Practice
Hohmeier Malas LLC is a growing CPA practice looking for a full-time Tax Accountant to join our small, close-knit team. This is not a cog-in-a-machine role at a large firm — it's a seat at the table in a tight-knit office where your work matters, your name is known to clients, and your growth is a priority. We're looking for someone who wants to put down roots. For the right person, this role is designed to grow into a partnership buy-in opportunity within 3–5 years as our senior partner transitions toward retirement. If you've ever wanted ownership in a practice — not just a paycheck — this is a rare chance to be mentored into ownership while deepening your craft alongside an experienced partner. What You'll Do Prepare individual (1040) tax returns assigned by the partners Coordinate directly with clients to gather information needed to finalize returns Take remote and in-person client meetings to review and finalize returns Support coordination and planning on S-Corporation, Partnership, LLC, and Trust returns Learn our processes, our software, and our approach to preparing returns While the focus is personal tax preparation, you'll gain meaningful exposure to business and fiduciary returns in a well-rounded role. What We're Looking For 2+ years of individual tax preparation experience, with a strong command of core 1040 preparation Confidence preparing standard individual returns independently — we'll teach you the more complex work (multi-state, S-corp, partnership, LLC, trust, and advanced planning). Our returns tend to be complex, and a genuine desire to learn that work is essential. Strong knowledge of individual tax preparation and a working knowledge of accounting Organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated — able to work both independently and as part of a team Personable and confident communicating directly with clients, in person and remotely Willing to learn new software and grow into greater responsibility CPA or CPA candidate required Experience with ProConnect Tax Online and QuickBooks is a plus Hours & Work Style We believe in balance across the full year. Tax season brings a focused, high-energy push, and we offset it with reduced, flexible hours during the rest of the year so the workload evens out over time. You'll thrive here if you enjoy a small-office environment where the team pulls together during the busy stretch and enjoys the breathing room afterward. Why Join Us You'll work side by side with an experienced partner who genuinely wants to teach — not just delegate. You'll build real client relationships, sharpen your technical skills across entity types, and have a defined runway toward ownership. If you want to be more than an employee and help carry a respected practice into its next chapter, we'd love to hear from you. Pay: $65,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year Benefits: 401(k) Continuing education credits Dental insurance Health insurance Paid time off Retirement plan Vision insurance Application Question(s): This role includes regular direct client meetings, in person and remote. How comfortable are you? Which individual tax return schedules and situations have you prepared independently? This role involves learning complex returns (multi-state, S-corp, partnership, trust, advanced planning). How do you feel about that? Are you a licensed CPA, or are you willing and able to sit for the CPA exam? Experience: Tax accounting: 2 years (Required) Ability to Commute: Deer Park, IL 60047 (Required) Work Location: In person
