Staff Accountant Job Description As a Staff Accountant at Financial Affairs, you will play a critical role in our dynamic team, supporting our clients through meticulous accounting practices and insightful financial reporting. This position offers the opportunity to work remotely, engaging directly with nonprofit leaders to enhance their financial operations and contribute to their success. Pod Assignment & Reporting Structure Staff Accountants are embedded in a specialty pod aligned to a client type - 501(c)(6) trade associations, federal grants-funded organizations, nonprofit startups, or general nonprofit clients - rather than assigned generically across the firm. Your reporting relationships are split by function: Pod Lead: day-to-day work assignment and prioritization, first-line technical review and quality control, mentorship and skill development, and the first point of escalation for client issues. Director of Client Services: time-off approval, performance reviews, disciplinary matters, compensation, and firm-wide client service standards. Primary job responsibilities Serve as the day-to-day working accountant on assigned client engagements within your pod - handling routine client questions and requiring understanding of client operations, interpersonal dynamics, and mission. You will work under a Pod Lead, who owns the overall client relationship, assigns and prioritizes engagement work, and serves as your first point of technical review, mentorship, and escalation. Also includes: Assisting clients with budget preparation, audit prep, grant reports, compliance advice, internal controls, etc. as needed Preparing interim and year-end close workpapers Compiling financial statements Reviewing bookkeeping performed by client staff or ours Responding to questions from clients about a variety of nonprofit accounting topics, such as: Functional expense accounting Coding expenses to grants Determining independent contractor vs. employee status Analyzing general ledger Designing accounting database structure Support the firm’s Bookkeepers and perform some bookkeeping services directly Collaborate with your Pod Lead and fellow pod members on client work, technical questions, and workflow coordination; collaborate cross-pod as needed on shared clients or firm-wide initiatives Provide hands-on QuickBooks training and troubleshooting for clients Participate in peer review of year-end close and other workpapers within your pod, as directed by your Pod Lead Manage self-administration tasks (time reports, workplan updates, etc.) Other duties as may be assigned Job requirements Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience At least three years’ nonprofit accounting experience Experience preparing IRS Form 990 preferred Experience working with nonprofits Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP Strong knowledge of Excel and QuickBooks Basic familiarity with payroll compliance and regulations Superior accuracy and attention to detail Excellent organizational skills Excellent technical writing skills Strong interpersonal skills Ability to self-motivate, work independently and as part a team Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills Strong time management skills and ability to keep track of many tasks that require follow-up Willingness and ability to give and receive critical feedback with generosity of spirit and openness to learning Ability to maintain positive working relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds Sense of humor Qualities We’re Looking For Thrive in a fast-paced environment Organized and detail-oriented under pressure Hardworking, highly self-motivated, and a quick learner Great sense of humor, high energy, and enthusiasm for working on a small and growing team Logistics Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience ($65,000 annual salary) The position is full-time.
