This is an exciting role supporting 7 consultants and 6 fellows in a fast paced environment. The postholder will be part of the senior clinical team with a priority on the delivery of the service. Whilst you will take responsibility for your own training and development, the Trust will offer you opportunities to further your knowledge and skills and you will be assigned an Educational Supervisor. You will work in accordance with the GMC Good Medical Practice and Trust policies and engage in revalidation and appraisal. Applicants should have completed their specialty training in Ophthalmology and fulfil all the competencies of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Specialty Training Curriculum in this respect. The post holder will provide extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of anterior segment disease (Corneal/External diseases and Refractive) and General Ophthalmology including Oculoplastics and Glaucoma. The post holder will be expected to participate in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of patients with all types of anterior segment diseases primarily but will also provide frontline General Ophthalmology and Oculoplastic service assistance. The post holder will be encouraged to develop their clinical skills and progress in the post, taking on an increasingly complex caseload. Whilst service delivery is important, contributions to the wider trust as a medical leader in fields such as research, audit, outcomes, management and teaching will be expected and supported by the department and QVH. The ability to provide unsupervised cataract and cross-linking surgery to a competent level is non-negotiable and a fundamental requirement of the Post. Inability to provide this service may lead to the termination of contract. Rated GOOD overall with outstanding care by the CQC. The role will predominately involve undertaking ward rounds, being responsible for liaising with the SOS nurse regarding acute patients and also accepting trauma patients referred in from other Trusts as well as carrying out independent cataract theatre lists. Other tasks will include undertaking oculoplastic minor operations in a clinic setting, YAG laser surgery in a clinic setting. Being responsible for organising and participating in the departmental teaching sessions, along with clinical governance meetings and bi-monthly audit meetings. The postholder will have the ability to establish themselves as the point of contact for acute care of our patients while maintaining regular cross linking and YAG laser lists. The post includes regular cataract surgery sessions. The role includes the ability to perform minor corneal and oculoplastic procedures in a clinic setting. The postholder is expected to be involved in the overall service shaping and management through reviewing clinical harm reviews under direct supervision from the respective consultant, triaging referrals. Moreover, the postholder will be responsible for the department cataract audit and managing the rota for grand rounds, teaching and regular governance and audit meetings. The unit has an international reputation for research. The Specialty Doctor will be expected to participate in new and on-going projects as well as presentations at national and international meetings.
