Software Engineer II - Plan Services
Software Engineer II, Plan Services Location: Boston, Massachusetts Salary: USD 150,000 - USD 161,500 Who We Are At Wayfair we are well on the way to becoming the world’s number one, online destination for all things home. Our core belief is that everyone should live in a home they love. We make this possible by ensuring our 24 million customers have all the technology and innovation they need at their fingertips, to give them access to our more than 33 million products which are provided by our 23,000 awesome global suppliers. In the Storefront team, we are the first impression of a customer’s shopping experience; we own the design and implementation of the customer-facing website. We partner with Product, Experience Design, Analytics and business leaders across Wayfair; our Storefront Engineering teams ensure that we’re building technology that solves important customer problems in elegant, scalable, measurable ways. The Plans Services is concerned with providing accurate and consistent plans for the fulfillment of orders from the supplier or warehouse to the customer. The Software Development Engineer II analyzes, designs, programs, debugs, and modifies software enhancements and new products for local, networked, cloud-based, or Internet-related computer programs. This role involves writing code, completing programming, and performing testing and debugging of applications using current programming languages and technologies. The engineer also creates documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance. Collaboration with users may be required to define system requirements and necessary modifications. Design, build, and operate C#/.NET APIs and Kafka consumers that orchestrate end-to-end fulfillment workflows across suppliers, facilities, carriers, and customer delivery. Deliver core planning capabilities — delivery estimates, supplier order assignment, carrier estimates, truck and lane capacity — trading off delivery speed, cost, and network constraints. Build high-throughput event-driven pipelines on Kafka with Avro contracts, and data models across Aerospike, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server that hold up under latency-sensitive traffic. Contribute to technical planning and modernization: tighter service boundaries, retiring legacy capacity and assignment paths, and more resilient planning flows. Own production health for your services — metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, incident response — and drive latency, throughput, and cost improvements. Partner with product, operations, analytics, data science, and engineering teams across checkout, order management, warehousing, transportation, and supplier systems to turn business problems into measurable outcomes. Raise the engineering bar through code review, automated testing, CI/CD, clear documentation, and safe rollouts behind feature flags. We Are a Match Because You have ~3–5 years building and operating backend or distributed systems in production. You're strong in an object-oriented language and productive in C#/.NET — or ready to ramp fast from a comparable stack (Java/Spring, Kotlin, Go). You think in events: you've built on Kafka or similar brokers and reason carefully about ordering, retries, idempotency, and eventual consistency in asynchronous flows. You design resilient APIs and data models, and can debug and tune SQL and NoSQL access paths in production (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Aerospike or Redis). You are proficient in domain-driven design, event sourcing, or other patterns common in distributed, microservices-based backends. You own services end to end — design, deployment, monitoring, on-call — and make informed trade-offs between correctness, performance, and delivery speed, surfacing risks with clear options and impact. You turn ambiguous requirements spanning multiple teams into implementable designs and incremental milestones, reading code and data to build your own understanding. You communicate and document clearly across functions and time zones, explaining trade-offs to technical and non-technical partners. You are excited about high-scale, event-driven engineering at the center of Wayfair’s fulfillment network — and about owning the systems that decide how every order reaches a customer Why You’ll Love Wayfair Time Off: Paid Holidays Paid Time Off (PTO) Health & Wellness: Full Health Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, HSA/FSA) Life Insurance DIsability Protection (Short Term & Long Term DIsability) Global Wellbeing: Gym/Fitness discounts (including US Peloton, Global ClassPass, and various regional gym memberships) Mental Health Support (Global Mental Health, Global Wayhealthy Recordings) Caregiver Services Financial Growth & Security: 401K Matching (Employee Matching Program) Tuition Reimbursement Financial Health Education (Knowledge of Financial Education - KOFE) Tax Advantaged Accounts Family Support: Family Planning Support Parental Leave Global Surrogacy & Adoption Policy Professional Development & Recognition: Rewards & Recognition Global Employee Anniversary Awards Paid Volunteer Work Unique Perks: Employee Discount U.S. Bluebikes Membership Global Pod Outings Work/Life Balance: Emphasizing a supportive & flexible work environment that encourages a balance between personal and professional commitments We are looking forward to your application!
