Software Development Engineer, Inventory Genealogy
Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) powers the physical engine at the heart of Amazon. AFT builds and operates software, hardware, and processes that run the global network of fulfillment centers that move many billions of units of inventory, employ tens of thousands of people, and ensure that customers get what they want when we promised we would get it to them. We do this by building automated solutions to handle things that technology does well, while relying on people to handle things that humans do well. Our inventory systems are the authoritative source of information for billions of inventory units that Amazon holds in its logistical networks, worldwide. As new inventory arrives to our networks, inventory systems enable Amazon's supply chain to route products to optimal locations based on space availability, customer demand and buying patterns. Inventory systems track the state of all items and their location, and share the availability to upstream systems, to make the items sellable on the Amazon website. When customer orders come in, inventory systems reserve specific items and track them through various stages of order fulfillment, until shipments are delivered to customers. Throughout this end-to-end inventory movement, inventory systems detect discrepancies between virtual and physical states of inventory, and enable corrections of virtual inventory state via both preventative and mitigating mechanisms.
