The Digital and Emerging Payments team at Amazon is working to make that happen, building payment experiences that work across geographies, platforms, and customer expectations. From Android and Fire devices to resilient back-end systems that guarantee no order is ever lost, the technical challenges here are real and the customer impact is global. We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to help lead the technical direction of our payments platform. You will own the design and delivery of systems that process transactions at massive scale, mentor fellow engineers, and shape architectural decisions that determine how millions of customers complete their purchases. If you’re passionate about solving complex distributed systems challenges and want to make a direct impact on the customer experience, this could be the role for you. Key job responsibilities - Lead the design and delivery of payment platform features end-to-end, ensuring systems are reliable and performant across multiple geographies and device platforms. - Own your team's architectural direction by evaluating technology choices, defining engineering best practices, and guiding future system design while balancing short-term delivery with long-term maintainability. - Collaborate with product managers, partner engineering teams, and stakeholders across Amazon to define requirements, align on technical approaches, and deliver integrated solutions. - Mentor engineers on your team through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on guidance, raising the overall quality of the codebase. - Use metrics and operational data to identify improvement opportunities, drive rapid iteration on features, and maintain high availability for payment systems. A day in the life You review a design document for a new payment method integration, providing feedback that helps a teammate strengthen their approach. You dive deep into code, building a service component that must process thousands of transactions per second while staying resilient when downstream dependencies are unavailable. You join a cross-team sync with product managers to discuss upcoming requirements for an emerging market, then pair with a junior engineer on a tricky concurrency issue. Throughout the day, you balance hands-on engineering with the architectural thinking that keeps the platform reliable and ready for what comes next. About the team The Digital and Emerging Payments team is responsible for how Amazon customers pay across the globe. We build and run the systems that connect customers to the payment methods they trust, whether that is a credit card, a mobile wallet, or a region-specific option unique to their market. Our mission is to make every transaction feel simple and reliable. We are an inclusive group that values knowledge sharing and mentorship. Team members at every experience level contribute to technical decisions, and we invest in each person's growth by matching projects to development goals. If you want to shape the future of payments at Amazon's scale, we would love to hear from you. - 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience - 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience - 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
