Job Summary The Director of Systems Engineering is a pivotal executive leadership role reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, responsible for the operational performance, technical quality, and strategic direction of Acorn’s Systems Engineering organization. This role owns engineering delivery, reference architectures, technical standards, major escalations, and the professional development of Level II and Level III engineering personnel. In our organizational structure, this position provides direct leadership to the Principal of Systems Engineering, the Principal of Project Engineering, and the Principal of the Security Operations Center (SOC). Operating in a discretionary hybrid capacity, the Director transitions the engineering organization from reactive support toward a standardized, scalable, and consultative engineering practice, ensuring technical credibility at both the executive and architectural levels. General Purpose of the Position The core purpose of this position is to establish technical operating discipline, drive modernization, and scale engineering capability while embodying our core value of Excellence through continuous improvement. By bridging business strategy with complex infrastructure architecture, the Director ensures our systems are resilient, supportable, and aligned with client operational needs. Through rigorous accountability, standard enforcement, and close cross-departmental collaboration with Operations, Service Desk, Project Management, and Account Management, this role safeguards client environments and positions Acorn as an elite managed technology partner. Job Description Organizational Leadership & Mentorship: Lead, mentor, and develop the Systems Engineering organization (including Level II/III engineers and department Principals); establish career paths, competency models, training programs, and performance standards that build a culture of ownership, accountability, and documentation. Technical Standards & Architecture: Establish and enforce Acorn’s technical standards, reference architectures, and engineering best practices across networking, servers, virtualization, cloud, storage, backup/DR, and monitoring infrastructure. Escalations & Incident Governance: Own engineering escalations and critical tier-3 infrastructure incidents, conducting root-cause investigations and implementing preventative controls to eliminate recurring issues. PMO & Project Engineering Alignment: Partner closely with Project Management and Project Engineering leadership on scoping, design, technical bills of materials, and statements of work, establishing strict operational handoff and documentation standards before implementation transitions to support. Cross-Functional Departmental Oversight: Guide and integrate workflows between the Principal of Systems Engineering, the Principal of Project Engineering, and the Principal of the SOC Department to ensure unified defense-in-depth and systems stability. Client Advisory & Executive Engagement: Serve as senior technical counsel for strategic and complex client accounts; participate in executive reviews, QBRs, and assessments, translating technical risk into actionable business strategy. Automation & Stack Optimization: Collaborate with operations teams to automate repetitive engineering workflows, drive standardization across client environments, and continuously evaluate Acorn's internal technology stack. Security & Risk Alignment: Partner with cybersecurity leadership to embed security requirements into infrastructure design, assess technical vulnerabilities, and support compliance audits (e.g., CMMC, NIST, SOC 2, CJIS). Capacity & Utilization Management: Monitor engineering workload, utilization rates, project commitments, and ticket backlogs to ensure balanced capacity and high service efficiency. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent high-level professional experience will be considered. 15+ years of progressive IT infrastructure and systems engineering experience. 7+ years of dedicated engineering leadership or management experience, with proven success leading Level II/III technical teams within an MSP or enterprise service delivery environment. Documented track record establishing technical standards, reference architectures, and structured engineering handoff procedures. Advanced expertise in Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, virtualization (VMware/Scale Computing), complex network switching/routing/firewalls, and backup/DR strategies. Experience supporting mission-critical, regulated environments (e.g., municipalities, public safety, healthcare, legal, or manufacturing). Deep familiarity with ITIL service management frameworks and security compliance standards (NIST, CIS, SOC 2, CMMC). Advanced technical certifications are highly preferred (e.g., MCSE, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, CCNA/CCNP, CISSP, CSEP). Leadership Attributes & Competencies Proven ability to challenge architectural assumptions, assess downstream impacts, and make sound decisions based on risk and long-term sustainability. Exceptional executive communication and presentation skills, with the credibility to advise C-level client executives as well as mentor deep-tier technical specialists. Job Type: Full-time, Salaried Exempt Department: Engineering / Operations Reports To: Chief Operating Officer Work Location: Ontario, CA. This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (typically 2-3 days in-office, with remote flexibility for the remaining days). However, all work-from-home options are extended at the sole discretion of management and may be modified or eliminated at any time based on company and operational needs. Travel Requirements: Occasional travel to client sites across Southern California for high-level technical reviews, client escalations, and executive meetings. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Close visual acuity to read technical documentation, analyze system data, and view computer monitors for extended periods. Clear verbal communication and sufficient auditory capability to provide instruction, lead meetings, and interact with others through voice, phone, and video conferences. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move IT equipment and office supplies weighing up to 20 lbs. Ability to reliably commute to and work fully on-site at the Ontario, CA corporate office as required by business needs.
