Senior Accountant, Sales & Use Tax

Our client, a high-growth AI technology infrastructure company, is seeking a Senior Accountant to lead its sales and use tax function while supporting broader accounting and compliance initiatives.

Location: Menlo Park, CA. This role is hybrid, with in-office expectations of 2 to 3 days per week.

Job Description: This hands-on role will build scalable tax processes, evaluate multi-state requirements, and partner with Accounting, Sales, Legal, Procurement, and external advisors. The ideal candidate brings strong indirect tax experience, sound accounting judgment, and the ability to establish new processes within a rapidly evolving environment.

Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and manage the company's multi-state sales and use tax processes in partnership with external tax advisors
• Evaluate state registration requirements, secure applicable tax permits, and maintain exemption certificates
• Review customer agreements to determine taxability and document the company's sales tax positions
• Analyze equipment and other vendor purchases to determine whether sales tax was properly charged or use tax should be accrued
• Build scalable tax policies, compliance calendars, controls, procedures, and supporting documentation
• Partner with Sales, Legal, Procurement, and Finance to assess the tax implications of new offerings, customer arrangements, and geographic expansion
• Coordinate and review work performed by external tax advisors to ensure accurate and timely compliance
• Monitor regulatory developments and evaluate their potential impact on the organization
• Develop and maintain internal controls over tax processes and support tax-related audit requests
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and other month-end close deliverables

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred
• 3+ years of accounting or tax experience within public accounting, a public company, or a high-growth organization
• Hands-on experience with multi-state sales and use tax compliance, including nexus analysis, taxability assessments, registrations, and exemption certificates
• Demonstrated ability to build or improve tax processes, controls, compliance calendars, and supporting documentation
• Strong Excel, analytical, communication, and project-management skills, with experience using ERP and tax automation platforms preferred
