Sr. Accountant Manufacturing Company Aurora, IL POSITION SUMMARY The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Controller and is responsible for key areas of general accounting, with primary ownership of inventory and cost accounting activities. This role manages and analyzes inventory costing, including average costing, landed costs, cycle count support, and inventory reserve analysis, while serving as a key user and resource for NetSuite accounting functions. The Senior Accountant provides accurate and timely financial information, supports the integrity of inventory and cost accounting processes, and works independently to identify and resolve accounting issues. The role also collaborates with internal teams to support effective financial controls, reporting, and continuous improvement of accounting processes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, with particular ownership of inventory and cost of goods sold accounts Own inventory and cost accounting, including average costing, landed cost allocation, variance analysis, and E&O reserve calculations Partner with operations and warehouse teams to manage the cycle count program and investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies Serve as a key NetSuite user, supporting reporting, saved searches, and process improvements to strengthen ERP accuracy Assist in month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations Conduct variance analysis and provide recommendations for improvement, particularly related to inventory costing and working capital metrics Support the preparation of budgets and forecasts, providing insights and recommendations to improve financial performance Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting Provide backup support for payroll processing and related compliance activities as needed (payroll experience preferred but not required) Support sales and use tax compliance by reviewing Avalara data and performing reconciliations; this is currently outsourced with a goal of bringing it in-house over time Assist in the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures Participate in financial audits and provide necessary documentation and support Stay updated on industry trends and changes in accounting standards, cost accounting methods, and ERP best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA certification is a plus) 5+ years of experience in accounting, with meaningful experience in inventory and cost accounting (manufacturing industry experience is strongly preferred) Hands-on experience with NetSuite or a similar ERP system; comfort digging into system configuration and reporting to improve data accuracy is a plus Payroll processing experience is a plus, but not required Understanding of sales and use tax filings and reconciliations across multiple states; Avalara/AvaTax experience is a strong plus Strong knowledge of GAAP, including average cost inventory valuation and landed cost accounting MS Office Suite Proficiency and AI Tools (advanced Excel, MS Copilot, and Claude skills are a plus) Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Strong attention to detail and accuracy Ability to work independently and meet deadlines Ability and interest in collaborating in a team environment Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Business partner and team mentality with demonstrated ability to interact at all levels within the organization Ability to maintain confidentiality WORK ENVIRONMENT DESCRIPTION This role operates in a hybrid environment, splitting time between home and the office.
