Job Overview We are seeking an energetic and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our finance team. In this pivotal role, the Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the Company's general ledger through timely balance sheet reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, lease accounting, and technical accounting support. This role serves as the primary owner of the Company's balance sheet and is responsible for ensuring all significant asset and liability accounts are reconciled monthly in accordance with the Financial Close Policy. Working closely with the Divisional Controller, Project Accountants, FP&A, and Operations, the Senior Accountant supports the monthly close process, prepares technical accounting analyses, and develops high-quality working papers for management reporting and year-end external review. The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining strong financial controls while continuously improving accounting processes and reporting efficiency. Primary Responsibilities: Balance Sheet Accounting Maintain ownership of all assigned balance sheet accounts by: Preparing monthly reconciliations Investigating and resolving reconciling items Ensuring timely resolution of aged balances Supporting month-end and year-end closing activities Preparing supporting schedules Maintaining reconciliation documentation Typical reconciliations include: Bank accounts Credit cards Accounts receivable control Holdback receivable Prepaid expenses Deposits Inventory (where applicable) Fixed assets Capital work in progress Lease liabilities Accounts payable control Accrued liabilities Payroll liabilities GST/PST accounts Intercompany balances Loans and financing Deferred revenue (where applicable) Fixed Asset Accounting Responsible for the complete lifecycle of Company capital assets including: Capitalization reviews Asset additions Transfers Disposals Depreciation calculations Construction-in-progress accounting Asset tagging and records Annual asset verification Coordination with Equipment Operations Maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register Supporting insurance compliance and reporting Ensure compliance with the Company's Capital Asset Policy and ASPE Lease Accounting Maintain accounting records for all leased assets by: Recording new leases Monthly lease accounting entries Interest calculations Amortization schedules Lease reconciliations Supporting lease disclosures General Ledger Management Maintain the integrity of the Company's general ledger through: Journal entry preparation Supporting documentation General ledger analysis Account monitoring Investigation of unusual transactions Correction of accounting errors Financial Close Support the monthly close by: Completing assigned reconciliations Preparing recurring journal entries Preparing month-end accruals Reviewing account activity Assisting with variance investigations Meeting Financial Close Policy deadlines Support achievement of the Company's 7–9 business day close schedule. Tax & Regulatory Support Assist with: GST returns PST returns Government reporting CRA information requests Audit schedules Year-End Support Prepare audit-ready working papers including: Balance sheet reconciliations Fixed asset continuity schedules Lease schedules Supporting analyses Information requested by external accountants Internal Controls Support strong financial controls by: Maintaining reconciliation standards Ensuring proper supporting documentation Monitoring unusual account activity Identifying process improvements Supporting compliance with Company policies Systems & Process Improvement Partner with the Controller and IT to improve: ERP utilization Accounting automation Financial reporting Reconciliation efficiency Data quality Identify opportunities to reduce manual work while strengthening controls. Stakeholder Relationships Develop effective working relationships with: Controller CFO FP&A Manager Project Accountants Project Managers Equipment Department Human Resources Information Technology External Accountants Banks Qualifications CPA designation or CPA candidate preferred Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Commerce 5–8 years progressive accounting experience Experience in construction or project accounting preferred Knowledge & Experience Strong knowledge of: ASPE General ledger accounting Balance sheet reconciliations Fixed asset accounting Lease accounting Construction accounting Job costing GST/PST Excel ERP systems (Explorer Eclipse preferred) Core Competencies The successful Senior Accountant demonstrates: Technical accounting expertise Exceptional attention to detail Analytical thinking Organization Accountability Integrity Problem solving Time management Continuous improvement Effective communication Customer service orientation Authority The Senior Accountant is delegated authority in accordance with the Company's Delegation of Authority Policy and may approve journal entries, reconciliations, and accounting transactions within approved limits while maintaining appropriate segregation of duties. How We Measure Success The Senior Accountant's success is measured by the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the Company's financial records and the integrity of its balance sheet. Financial Accuracy 100% of assigned balance sheet accounts reconciled monthly. Zero material unreconciled balances. Less than 1% post-close adjustments attributable to assigned accounts. Accurate fixed asset accounting and depreciation. Financial Close All reconciliations completed in accordance with the 7–9 business day close schedule. Journal entries submitted accurately and on time. High-quality month-end working papers. Fixed Assets Complete and accurate Fixed Asset Register. Annual physical verification completed. Accurate capitalization and disposal accounting. Internal Controls Compliance with Company accounting policies. Compliance with the Financial Close Policy. Compliance with the Delegation of Authority Policy. Complete audit trail supporting all assigned accounts. Continuous Improvement Reduction in manual reconciliations. Increased automation of accounting processes. Improved ERP utilization. Implementation of process improvements that strengthen financial controls. Success Profile A successful Senior Accountant is recognized as the technical expert responsible for the integrity of the Company's balance sheet. They produce accurate reconciliations, maintain exceptional accounting records, proactively identify and resolve issues, and provide reliable financial information that supports effective decision-making. Through disciplined execution and continuous improvement, they help ensure the Company's financial reporting is timely, accurate, and audit-ready.
