Sawmill Manager (Hardwood)

Job Summary

Meherrin River Forest Products is seeking an experienced and motivated Sawmill Manager to oversee daily hardwood sawmill operations. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a solid understanding of hardwood lumber manufacturing, and a proven ability to manage production, employees, safety, quality, and operating costs.

The Sawmill Manager will be responsible for driving production efficiency, maximizing lumber recovery, maintaining equipment performance, and ensuring a safe and productive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily sawmill production and ensure production goals are achieved.
• Supervise, lead, and develop production employees and supervisors.
• Monitor production efficiency, lumber recovery, product quality, and waste.
• Enforce company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
• Coordinate equipment maintenance and minimize production downtime.
• Manage staffing, scheduling, attendance, and overtime.
• Monitor labor costs, operating expenses, and production performance.
• Identify opportunities to improve productivity and operational efficiency.
• Maintain accurate production and safety reports.
• Coordinate with maintenance, log procurement, grading, drying, and shipping teams.
• Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in sawmill management, hardwood lumber manufacturing, or a similar wood products operation.
• Demonstrated leadership and employee supervision experience.
• Knowledge of sawmill equipment, production processes, and lumber recovery.
• Strong understanding of industrial safety practices.
• Ability to analyze production results and implement process improvements.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment.
