Job Title: Recreation Leader

Salary Range: $50,000 - $55,000 per year

Location: South Orange Village Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs

The Recreation Leader will assist with oversight and maintenance of recreation facilities including the Baird, community pool, parks and athletic fields. The recreation leader will work with the Deputy Director to support programs, activities and special events scheduled by the Department and Village. Must be available to work weekends and weeknights for occasional events.

The duties of the Recreation Leader include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and oversee department facilities (buildings, grounds, athletic fields,pool) for ongoing maintenance and repair needs.
• Facility & Maintenance Oversight: Monitor and maintain recreation buildings, grounds, athletic fields, and the community pool. Supervise seasonal maintenance staff, and handle equipment upkeep.
• Pool Operations: Assist with opening and closing the community pool, monitor daily operations, check mechanical and sanitation equipment, and oversee supply needs.
• Special Events: Act as an on-site event coordinator for community ceremonies, parades, holiday celebrations, and outdoor concerts, managing setup, equipment, and coordination with performers and technical crews.
• Program & Gymnasium Support: Perform seasonal preparations, manage sports equipment inventory, and assist with youth sports programs and events.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: 3 years of experience in building/grounds construction, repair, or maintenance.
• License & Certifications: Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a truck with a trailer. Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Trained Pool Operator (TPO) preferred or willingness to obtain in the first 6 months.
• Skills: Strong leadership and communication skills, ability to work well on your own and with other, basic computer and keyboarding proficiency.
• Physical Requirements: Comfortable with repetitive heavy lifting (50–75 lbs) and constant physical movement.
• Monitor outdoor facilities daily for playing conditions and seasonally for safety.
• Work with other departments, as needed, to complete shared tasks
• Repair/replace equipment for all fields, tennis courts, parks etc…
• Monitor and replace athletic equipment, as needed.

Pool

• Evaluate and assess facility and equipment needs prior to opening each year.
• Oversee opening and closing of community pool, DPW and other, as needed.
• Work with the Deputy Director in monitoring the daily operations and maintenance of the pool throughout the season.
• Checks and monitors all facility mechanical and other equipment and sanitation of pools and bathhouse facilities;
• Evaluate seasonal needs and requisition supplies for pool use.
• Monitor maintenance and operations logs throughout the season

Special Events

• Assists with preparation and oversight of special community events
• On site event coordinator for the department, assisting with setup and management of equipment and other needs for public events. This includes ceremonies, parades, holiday celebrations, outdoor concerts, etc
• Works in conjunction with event planners, performers, audio technicians,television crews and other parties to make the event run smoothly
• Manage all audio/video equipment, as needed, for department meetings and events.

Program Support

• Assists with inventory, ordering and requisitions of necessary supplies and equipment for Recreation & cultural arts programming.
• Oversee and assist with seasonal preparation for Department sponsored activities, i.e. inventory and assembly if needed) of and setup of necessary field/facility,equipment.
• Annual inventory and purchase of sports equipment that are to be made on a annual or routine basis
• Assisting Recreation Department personnel and volunteers with scheduled programs on weekends and weeknights.
• Pick-up, delivery and organization of materials and supplies, as requested
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times,streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Skills Required

• Driver license required
• Ability to drive a truck with a trailer
• Certified Pool Operator preferred(willingness to obtain)
• Trained Pool Operator preferred(willingness to obtain)

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the tools, materials and methods used in the repair and maintenance of buildings, grounds and related structures.
• Knowledge of the methods used to evaluate completed maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to evaluate completed maintenance and repair assignments.
• Comfortable with repetitive heavy lifting (50-75lb) and constant movement
• Ability to identify and analyze maintenance and repair problems.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
