Product management is a newer function at our company. Until recently it was handled part-time across engineering, operations, and leadership, and it has outgrown that arrangement. The scope and workflows of the role are still being defined, and you'll have a hand in defining them. We need someone who can take a project from "we should build this" all the way to "customers are using it and understand it": talking to the right people, getting the requirements right before engineering starts building, and seeing it through to launch. If helping shape a role rather than stepping into a fully mapped-out one sounds exciting, keep reading. If you'd rather join an established product org with a playbook already written, this probably isn't the role for you. What You'll Own Every project you take on, you own end to end: - Discovery and requirements. Sit with support, sales, operations, and customers directly. Understand the real-world task the customer is trying to complete, break it into steps, and turn those steps into features and functional requirements. Produce wireframes that show how the workflow will look on screen. - Tickets engineering can actually build from. Write well-formed Jira tickets with clear acceptance criteria and data requirements: what's displayed live in the UI, and what needs to be stored for later reporting. - Keeping projects moving. Coordinate with engineering leadership, design, and operations to determine where each ticket fits in overall priorities. Work with engineers on estimates, own the project timeline, make scope trade-offs to hit dates, and surface risks and slips early rather than late. Monitor tickets so nothing sits waiting for a decision that nobody knows they need to make. - UX quality. Make sure the user can complete the task in the order they naturally think about it, and that information on screen is clear and legible. - Testing before and after release. Test on staging and production. Find the bugs, the lag, the rough edges, and document exactly what needs to change. Retest until it feels production-ready. - Internal rollout and training. Write up how each release works, train internal staff, and be the go-to person for questions. Coordinate staff testing of new features and channel that feedback back to engineering. - Launch. Draft customer-facing announcements and coordinate final release timing with the development team. Discovery, requirements, and keeping projects moving are the core of the job. Testing, internal training, and launch communications are also part of it, because on a small team the person who owns a feature sees it all the way through; if those parts sound like a chore rather than part of shipping well, please don't apply. The Technical Bar You don't need to write code. You do need to be able to hold a productive conversation with an engineer about what's possible, what's hard, and what the trade-offs are, and you need to understand why something that sounds like a simple feature may actually be difficult. You should be comfortable looking at how the application behaves and at its data model well enough to specify what should be shown on screen versus stored for reporting. Our product is GPS fleet tracking, which means physical devices in vehicles, firmware, cellular connectivity, and a lot of data arriving in near real time. Prior experience with a product that includes hardware or devices is a real plus. Our stack, for context: Golang and MySQL on the server, Vue.js on the web, Swift (iOS) and Kotlin (Android) for mobile, on AWS. Ramp-up and the 60-day review Nobody expects you to know our system on day one. Your first weeks will be spent learning the product alongside support and operations before you take ownership of a project. This role starts with a 60-day review period. At the end of it, we'll evaluate against goals we set together at the start (e.g. a project owned end to end, tickets engineers could build from without coming back for clarification, a release tested and communicated), and both sides decide whether to continue. Required Skills - 3+ years in a product management, product owner, or closely related role. Business analysts with genuine product ownership experience will be considered. - A track record of turning business workflows into functional software requirements. - Experience writing user stories and tickets in Jira or an equivalent tracker. - Working knowledge of a wireframing tool (Figma, Balsamiq, or similar). - Strong written communication for both technical (ticket) and non-technical (staff and customer) audiences. - Ability to drive alignment across multiple stakeholders without formal authority over them. - Comfort talking directly with customers, support, and sales to understand their problems. Preferred Skills - Familiarity with SQL or the ability to read a data schema. - Prior experience with hardware, IoT, telematics, or fleet products. - Prior experience training or supporting internal staff on new tools. Logistics The position is an IN-OFFICE position, and after a couple of months getting grooved in it will move to a HYBRID position, with two days required in the office per week. Occasional flexibility outside core hours may be needed around release windows. As the team and product grow, we expect this position to grow into leading a small product/design function.
