# Principal Application Engineer/Technical Lead **Anacomp, Inc.** · St. Louis, MO 63146 · `On-site` 🕒 **Статус:** *Опубликовано: сегодня* · *Источник: Indeed* --- ### About the Role Principal Application Engineer / Technical Lead Location: St. Louis, Missouri Are You the Engineer Everyone Calls When Nobody Can Figure Out What's Wrong? We are looking for a deeply technical, hands-on Principal Application Engineer who loves understanding how complex systems work and figuring out how to make them better. You will become a technical authority across an environment that includes custom applications, databases, APIs and integrations, document and image processing, workflow automation, infrastructure, cloud technologies, and emerging AI capabilities. We don't expect you to already know every technology we use. We do expect you to be the kind of engineer who wants to figure it out. You'll work alongside our application engineers while helping establish technical direction, solve difficult problems, improve existing solutions, and identify technologies that can become new or improved customer capabilities. What You'll Do Solve Difficult Problems - Serve as a senior technical escalation point for complex application and system problems. - Personally investigate issues involving application code, databases, APIs, integrations, operating systems, infrastructure, performance, and third-party technologies. - Use source code, SQL, logs, metrics, monitoring, API testing, and other diagnostic techniques to determine root cause rather than relying on assumptions. Understand and Improve Our Technology - Develop a deep understanding of our existing applications, architecture, databases, integrations, and processing workflows. - Identify: - Performance bottlenecks - Scalability limitations - Reliability concerns - Security risks - Technical debt - Automation opportunities - Reusable capabilities - Modernization opportunities - Recommend practical improvements based on technical evidence and business value. Own Technical Direction - Help define application architecture and technical standards. - Translate complex customer and product requirements into technical designs. - Evaluate architectural alternatives and explain their trade-offs. - Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, observable, and supportable. Stay Hands-On - Write production-quality code, SQL, scripts, APIs, integrations, and utilities. - Build proof-of-concepts. - Review high-risk or architecturally significant code. - Work directly with developers when problems require deeper technical expertise. Explore What's Next - Evaluate emerging technologies and determine where they can create meaningful value. Areas may include: - AI and machine learning - OCR and intelligent document processing - Document/image processing - Workflow automation - Cloud services - APIs and integration - Containers - Developer productivity tools - Observability - Data processing and analytics - We value engineers who can distinguish useful technology from technology that is merely new. Elevate the Engineering Team - Mentor application engineers. - Conduct meaningful design and code reviews. - Teach engineers how to reason through technical problems rather than simply giving them answers. - Establish practical development standards and architecture patterns. - Help the team improve Git/GitHub, CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, and observability practices. Turn Ideas Into Executable Plans - Break complex requirements into technical components. - Develop credible levels of effort (LOEs). - Identify dependencies, technical risks, assumptions, and unknowns before development begins. - Help Product, Sales, Operations, QA, and Project Management determine what is technically achievable. What We're Looking For Typically 10+ years of professional software/application engineering experience, although demonstrated technical ability matters more than an exact number of years. You should have: - U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance - A high level of business acumen, with the ability to connect technical decisions to business value and customer impact - Significant hands-on software development experience - Strong application architecture/system-design skills - Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis ability - Strong SQL/database understanding - Experience with APIs and system integration - Experience with Git and modern development practices - CI/CD experience - Production troubleshooting experience - Experience mentoring engineers - Ability to independently learn unfamiliar technologies - Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly Technologies That May Be Relevant Experience across several is valuable; experience across all is not required: C#/.NET Python Java SQL Server PostgreSQL REST APIs Windows Server Linux Docker Kubernetes AWS/Azure GitHub GitHub Actions CI/CD Microservices Distributed Systems Message Queues Observability AI/ML OCR Document Processing Workflow Automation Particularly Valuable Experience We are especially interested in experience involving: - Federal government systems - Healthcare/medical records - Document management - Enterprise content management - OCR / intelligent document processing - High-volume imaging - Workflow automation - High-volume data-processing systems - Security-sensitive or regulated environments You Might Be the Person We're Looking For If... - You routinely want to know how systems actually work under the hood. - You enjoy opening unfamiliar source code and figuring it out. - You don't consider the database, operating system, infrastructure, or API “someone else's problem.” - You ask “why?” when a system behaves unexpectedly. - You enjoy building prototypes. - Other engineers ask for your help when they're stuck. - You can move comfortably between an architecture diagram, source code, a SQL query, and a production log. - You can say “I don't know,” followed immediately by “but here's how I'd figure it out.” - And despite being senior in your career, you still enjoy building things. What This Role Is Not This is not primarily an Engineering Manager role. Success will not be measured by the number of meetings you conduct. It will be measured by whether: - Difficult technical problems get solved. - Our architecture improves. - Our engineers become stronger. - Our solutions become more scalable and supportable. - Our estimates become more credible. - We make better technology decisions. - Existing solutions improve. - New technical capabilities become viable customer offerings. Pay: From $100,000.00 per year Benefits: - 401(k) matching - Dental insurance - Employee assistance program - Health insurance - Life insurance - Paid time off - Vision insurance Work Location: Hybrid remote in St. Louis, MO 63146
