As Operations Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the organisation, management, direction and control of all factory departments, ensuring that output is maximised, customer deadlines are met and efficiency is improved. You will control all production within the factory to achieve targets for quantity, quality, unit cost and customer requirements. You will also lead the design department, ensuring that design and manufacture work closely together. Key responsibilities Planning - Schedule and co-ordinate all production operations to achieve output, quality and delivery targets. - Carry out a daily review of production, hours, on-time delivery and safety issues. - Develop and implement short- and long-term plans so that the factory has the resources to meet business objectives. People - Lead and direct all factory staff and the Project Management team, ensuring that they are motivated, trained and developed, and that they work to the required standards and in accordance with Health and Safety requirements. - Ensure that Supervisors fulfil their job descriptions, and review their performance regularly. - Ensure that work is carried out efficiently, profitably and to the required standard. - Recommend improvements to performance and efficiency. - Conduct appraisals and set personal objectives and targets. - Foster effective working relationships and harmonious employee relations across the factory. Equipment - Ensure that appropriate machinery, plant, tools and safety control equipment are available. - Ensure that all equipment is maintained in a safe condition. - Develop the policies and procedures needed to maintain plant and equipment effectively and to sustain production efficiency. Design - Lead the design department, setting priorities and ensuring that general arrangement drawings and technical documentation are produced accurately and on time. - Ensure close co-ordination between design, project management and production, so that designs are practical to manufacture and meet customer requirements. - Manage, develop and appraise the design team. Health and safety - Hold overall responsibility for health and safety across the factory, ensuring compliance with current legislation and company policy. - Maintain and review risk assessments, safe systems of work and the Fire Risk Assessment. - Maintain the company’s SafeContractor accreditation. - Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, and ensure that corrective actions are completed. - Promote a positive safety culture, ensuring that staff are trained and that safety standards are enforced. General - Work with the Project Management team to obtain the best price for materials. - Maintain good working relationships with customers and suppliers. - Assist in negotiating contracts with contractors and suppliers, ensuring cost-effective services for the factory. - Ensure adherence to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System. Requirements Essential - Proven experience managing a fabrication, welding or engineering production environment. - Demonstrable people management experience, including appraisals and performance management. - IOSH Managing Safely, or an equivalent health and safety qualification. - Sound working knowledge of health and safety legislation. - Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems. Desirable - Experience of leading or working closely with a design or engineering design team, including familiarity with AutoCAD or similar software. - Experience in the food processing or machinery sector. - A recognised management qualification. - NEBOSH General Certificate.
