Operations Manager

Heronswood Canine Retreat · Lancaster LA2 0AJ

Job Overview You will run the site day to day. Every department — reception, bookings, kennels, daycare, grooming, welfare and the training team — reports through you. You are responsible for standards being kept when nobody senior is watching, for the departments talking to each other, and for problems being found before a customer finds them. Duties - DAILY Walk the site every morning before the day starts. Kennels, daycare areas, grooming room, training barns, yards, fencing, water, bedding, cleanliness. Check the day’s bookings against staffing and flag gaps before they become problems. Be visible. Staff should expect to see you in every department, not in an office. Handle anything a customer escalates beyond reception. WEEKLY Chair a short all-departments meeting. The single biggest failure in a business like this is departments not telling each other things. Build and publish rotas. Review occupancy against capacity and report it to the owner. Spot-check welfare records, feeding charts, medication logs and incident reports. ONGOING Recruit, induct and train site staff. Run probation reviews and performance conversations. Hold people to standard. Address underperformance early and directly rather than letting it settle. Assist with licensing and compliance — local authority animal activity licensing, welfare standards, health and safety and inspection readiness. Keep the site presentable. Clients are buying confidence as much as a service WHAT YOU ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WELFARE - No avoidable welfare incidents. Records complete and accurate. COMPLIANCE - Licence conditions met at all times. Inspection-ready without notice. OCCUPANCY - Kennel and daycare capacity filled, particularly outside peak season. STAFF - Rotas covered, turnover low, underperformance addressed. STANDARDS - Site clean and presentable at any hour without warning. COMMUNICATION - Departments informed. Nothing lost between reception and the kennels WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR - ESSENTIAL Three years or more managing multiple teams in an operational, customer-facing environment. This is the core of the job. Comfortable holding people to account. You can tell someone their work is not good enough on a Tuesday and still work with them on Wednesday. Rota and staffing management for a seven-day operation, including cover, absence and peak periods. Experience of a regulated or inspected environment — licensing, welfare standards, health and safety, audits. Genuinely comfortable around dogs of all sizes and temperaments , including nervous and reactive dogs. Full UK driving licence. Pay: £36,000.00-£40,000.00 per year Benefits: Company pension On-site parking Sick pay Work Location: In person
