(SAMH) and York Addiction & Mental Health (YAMH) are residential addiction and mental health treatment centres dedicated to providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed care to individuals experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. The RN Nursing Operations Lead reports to the Director of Operations and Executive Leadership and works collaboratively with Clinical Leadership, Program Managers, physicians, and other organizational leaders to ensure safe, consistent, and effective nursing services across both locations. Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to provide nursing leadership and operational oversight across our Cookstown and Aurora locations . The RN Nursing Operations Lead is responsible for the day-to-day coordination, supervision, and leadership of nursing services across both sites. The successful candidate will provide RN-level clinical guidance while also supporting staffing, scheduling, documentation, medication management, quality assurance, training, compliance, and continuous improvement. This is a hands-on nursing leadership position suited to an RN who is comfortable balancing clinical practice with staff supervision, operational decision-making, and departmental leadership. The position works within the RN's professional scope of practice and does not replace the responsibilities of physicians, psychiatrists, or other regulated healthcare professionals. Key ResponsibilitiesNursing Operations & Supervision Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision, and operational coordination of nursing services across both locations. Coordinate nursing schedules, assignments, shift coverage, vacation coverage, and staffing requirements. Monitor staffing levels and identify coverage concerns or operational gaps. Provide direction to nursing staff regarding workflow, procedures, documentation, and client care. Lead regular nursing meetings and communicate organizational updates, expectations, policies, and procedures. Support onboarding, orientation, training, mentoring, and ongoing development of nursing staff. Participate in recruitment, interviewing, performance feedback, and other staff-management processes related to nursing. Identify staffing, performance, or operational concerns and escalate significant matters to organizational leadership. Promote consistent nursing practices and standards across both locations. Clinical & Medical Leadership Provide RN-level clinical leadership, guidance, and support to nursing staff. Assess clients' health status and respond appropriately to changes in physical or mental health. Support nurses with clinical assessment, triage, clinical decision-making, and escalation of concerns. Provide guidance regarding acute changes in client condition and determine when physician, emergency, or other healthcare intervention is required. Coordinate communication between nursing staff, physicians, psychiatrists, pharmacies, hospitals, specialists, and other healthcare providers. Review and follow up on physician orders, medication changes, treatment recommendations, and relevant medical documentation. Support implementation and monitoring of treatment plans within the nursing scope of practice. Provide clinical guidance related to addiction and mental health nursing, including withdrawal monitoring, medication-assisted treatment, and clients with co-occurring medical conditions. Provide guidance regarding CIWA and other applicable clinical assessment and monitoring tools. Support nurses in recognizing and responding to medication-related concerns, adverse reactions, changes in client condition, and other clinical risks. Support coordination and follow-up of medical appointments, referrals, laboratory investigations, diagnostic testing, and healthcare recommendations within the organization's scope of services. Participate in review and follow-up of significant clinical events and client-care concerns. Support emergency response and clinical decision-making when a client's condition requires urgent assessment or transfer to emergency services. Medication Management & Safety Provide operational oversight of nursing processes related to medication administration, medication reconciliation, medication changes, and medication documentation. Review MARs, medication records, physician orders, and related nursing documentation. Monitor controlled-substance and narcotic-management processes and required documentation. Liaise with pharmacy providers regarding medication packaging, dispensing, delivery, discrepancies, medication changes, and other medication-related matters. Support safe processes for scheduled, PRN, withdrawal-related, and other medications administered within the program. Identify and address medication discrepancies, omissions, documentation concerns, and medication-safety risks. Ensure medication-related incidents are appropriately documented, escalated, reviewed, and followed up. Documentation, Quality Assurance & Risk Management Conduct regular reviews and audits of nursing documentation for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and consistency. Review nursing assessments, progress notes, MARs, clinical forms, physician orders, and other nursing records. Identify documentation deficiencies and provide education and follow-up with nursing staff. Monitor compliance with established nursing procedures and clinical documentation standards. Track recurring clinical, medication, documentation, and operational issues and recommend improvements. Participate in incident reviews, investigations, corrective actions, and follow-up related to nursing and client-care concerns. Support quality-improvement initiatives and accreditation activities related to nursing and clinical services. Client Care & Clinical Coordination Support nursing staff in coordinating client medical appointments and appropriate follow-up. Ensure nurses have access to current medical information, physician orders, treatment plans, and relevant clinical documentation. Assist with admissions and ensure required nursing and medical information is obtained and documented. Support appropriate discharge planning and communication of relevant medical information. Promote continuity of care between the organization, physicians, pharmacies, hospitals, specialists, and community healthcare providers. Maintain appropriate communication regarding changes in client health status and significant clinical concerns. Infection Prevention & Control Provide nursing leadership related to infection prevention and control practices. Support implementation, education, and monitoring of IPAC policies and procedures. Identify and escalate infection-control concerns and support appropriate response measures. Participate in outbreak prevention, management, documentation, and communication when required. Ensure appropriate nursing practices related to hand hygiene, PPE, sharps safety, clinical equipment, and clinical waste. Compliance, Health & Safety Ensure nursing practices are consistent with applicable legislation, professional standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements. Identify nursing-related risks and escalate significant concerns to the Director of Operations and appropriate leadership. Support workplace health and safety initiatives relevant to nursing operations. Promote safe practices related to medication storage, sharps, clinical equipment, emergency response, and exposure incidents. Participate in investigations and corrective actions related to nursing, medication, client safety, and clinical incidents. Support accreditation, compliance, quality-assurance, and regulatory activities related to nursing services. Training & Professional Development Develop and deliver nursing education and competency-based training as required. Identify individual and departmental training needs. Support competency validation for nursing procedures and clinical processes. Coach and mentor nursing staff. Ensure new nursing staff receive appropriate orientation to nursing procedures, documentation systems, medication processes, emergency procedures, and clinical expectations. Cross-Site Operations Promote standardized nursing practices between the Cookstown and Aurora locations. Monitor implementation of standardized nursing policies, procedures, forms, and documentation systems. Identify differences in practice between locations and work with leadership to address inconsistencies. Travel between both locations as required for nursing leadership, operational support, training, meetings, and clinical oversight. Serve as the primary nursing operational resource for nursing staff at both locations. Leadership & Communication Maintain regular communication with the Director of Operations regarding nursing staffing, clinical risks, operational concerns, and departmental performance. Escalate significant clinical, staffing, medication, safety, or compliance concerns promptly. Work collaboratively with Clinical Leadership, Program Managers, physicians, pharmacy providers, and other organizational leaders. Maintain professional, respectful, and solution-focused communication with staff, clients, families, and external healthcare providers. Exercise sound judgment and maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality. Schedule & On-Call Requirements Employment Type: Full-Time, Salaried Five (5) 8-hour shifts per week. The RN Nursing Operations Lead will have flexibility to develop their own schedule in consultation with organizational leadership, provided operational requirements and required coverage are maintained. The position works across both the Cookstown and Aurora locations . The schedule will include a minimum of one weekend day per month at each location to maintain direct connection with weekend nursing staff and operations. Occasional schedule adjustments may be required for operational needs, staffing requirements, meetings, training, or other nursing priorities. After-Hours On-Call Participate in an after-hours nursing on-call function . Serve as a primary nursing contact for urgent nursing, clinical, medication, staffing, or operational concerns arising outside regular scheduled hours. After-hours calls are expected to occur from time to time based on operational needs and are not intended to represent continuous or uninterrupted availability. Provide direction within the RN's professional scope and delegated organizational authority. Escalate matters requiring senior leadership involvement or that fall outside the RN's authority or scope of practice. The RN is not expected to remain physically on site while on call unless specifically scheduled or required for an operational matter. Emergency situations requiring immediate emergency medical assistance should be directed to 911 and appropriate emergency services in accordance with organizational procedures. Qualifications Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Ontario and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Current CPR/BLS certification. Experience in addiction, mental health, withdrawal management, residential treatment, community healthcare, or a related setting is considered an asset. Previous nursing leadership, supervisory, charge nurse, clinical lead, or nursing operations experience is strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of medication administration, clinical documentation, assessment, and nursing standards. Experience with electronic medical records and electronic medication administration records is an asset. Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Ability to travel between the Cookstown and Aurora locations as required. Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced residential treatment environment.
