Job Summary:
The Engineering Manager – Configuration Management is responsible for the management, integrity, control, and release of product and manufacturing documentation across the organization. This position leads the Document Control function and serves as the primary interface between Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Production and external Contract Manufacturers for controlled product information.
The Engineering Manager – Configuration Management owns the governance and administration of product configuration data within the company’s ERP and Quality Management Systems, including Bills of Material (BOMs), approved engineering changes, drawings, specifications, work instructions, procedures, and other controlled documents.
This position ensures that the correct product definition and approved documentation are available at the correct revision, at the correct location, and at the correct time, both internally and throughout the external manufacturing network.
The role is responsible for establishing disciplined document and configuration control processes that prevent unauthorized or uncontrolled changes from reaching production.
Key Responsibilities:
ERP and Bill of Material Management
- Owns the creation, maintenance, accuracy, and controlled release of manufacturing Bills of Material within the Infor ERP system. - Establish and maintain standards for item master data, BOM structures, revisions, effectivity dates, and related product configuration information. - Ensure approved Engineering Change Orders and other authorized changes are accurately implemented within the ERP system. - Coordinate the timing and implementation of changes to minimize disruption to production, inventory, purchasing, and external Contract Manufacturers. - Work with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Planning, and Quality to evaluate the operational impact of proposed product changes. - Maintain appropriate controls to prevent unauthorized changes to released product configurations.
Engineering Change and Configuration Control
- Manage the formal Engineering Change Request and Engineering Change Order process. - Ensure proposed changes receive appropriate cross-functional review before implementation. - Coordinate change implementation across Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Production, Planning, and Contract Manufacturers. - Establish clear change effectivity, including implementation dates, serial number effectivity, work-order effectivity, inventory disposition, and supplier implementation requirements where applicable. - Maintain complete and auditable records of product revisions and configuration history. - Ensure obsolete documentation is removed from points of use and replaced with the current approved revision. - Escalate incomplete, conflicting, or unauthorized changes before they reach production.
Controlled Documentation and QMS Support
- Manage the company’s controlled document system in accordance with Quality Management System requirements. - Control the release, revision, distribution, and obsolescence of: -
- Engineering drawings
- Product specifications - Bills of Material - Work instructions - Manufacturing procedures - Quality procedures and forms - Inspection and test documentation - Approved supplier-related specifications - Other controlled operational documentation
- Maintain document approval workflows, revision histories, retention requirements, and access controls.
- Support the development and maintenance of an ISO 9001-aligned Quality Management System. - Support internal and external audits involving document control, configuration management, and change control.
Manufacturing Documentation
- Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure approved work instructions, assembly documentation, process specifications, and production records are properly controlled and released. - Ensure manufacturing personnel have access to current and approved documentation at the point of use. - Establish consistent document formats, numbering conventions, revision standards, and approval requirements. - Support the transition of new products from Design Engineering into controlled production documentation.
Contract Manufacturer Configuration Control
- Serve as a primary control point for the release of approved product documentation to Contract Manufacturers and external manufacturing partners. - Ensure external manufacturing partners receive complete, accurate, and revision-controlled documentation packages. - Maintain records of what product configuration and revision has been released to each manufacturing location. - Coordinate implementation of engineering changes across internal and external manufacturing operations. - Establish processes to confirm that obsolete documentation has been removed and replaced at external manufacturing locations. - Support configuration audits and reconciliation of product documentation between the company and its manufacturing partners.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Serve as the operational interface between Design Engineering and Manufacturing for the controlled release of product information. - Facilitate cross-functional review of engineering changes involving: -
- Design Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering - Quality - Supply Chain - Planning - Production - Contract Manufacturers
- Identify risks associated with proposed changes, including material availability, existing inventory, work in process, supplier impact, manufacturing readiness, and implementation timing.
- Establish clear escalation paths when documentation is incomplete, conflicting, or insufficient for production.
Department Leadership
- Lead, develop, and manage the Document Control team. - Establish departmental priorities, responsibilities, standard work, and performance expectations. - Develop measurable KPIs for document and change-control performance. - Ensure adequate training and cross-training within the department. - Drive continuous improvement of document-control, ERP-data, and change-management processes.
Decision Authority
