Lead Technician – Mac & PC Laptop Repair

Computer OverhaulsNew York, NY 10001

Position: Lead Technician – Mac & PC Laptop Repair

Company: Computer Overhauls

Have you opened more MacBooks and ThinkPads than you can count? Do you know by feel which screws hide under a glued battery, which parts Apple pairs to the logic board, and why a 2018 and a 2023 laptop need two completely different game plans? Are you confident repairing high value devices like M5 MacBook pros or Alienware Gaming laptops? If you're the tech other techs come to when a repair goes sideways—and you take pride in handing back a $2,000+ machine that looks and works like it never left the factory—we want you to lead our bench.

About the Role

As Lead Technician, you'll own the bench at Computer Overhauls, NYC's go-to destination for buying and selling premium consumer electronics. We are located in Midtown Manhattan on 26th street. This isn't solely a repair job: it's managing everything we acquire. A normal day involves wiping devices, restoring operating systems, testing bulk drop-off items, and triaging and repairing any device that needs service. Every device we buy goes through this process, and you'll be responsible for running it. On the repair side, every laptop we take in—Mac and PC, 2018 models through the newest 2026 releases—passes through your hands: you'll diagnose faults, replace what's broken (screens, keyboards, batteries, trackpads, speakers, cameras, ports, logic boards), and run our refurbishing line, PXE imaging for PCs and DFU restores for Macs. We do parts-level repair only, no board-level soldering, so precision and judgment matter more than a microscope: you know what is worth fixing and what is not. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who has done this work for years and wants a bench they can run their way.

We're a small business, so everyone pitches in. During peak times you may need to step out front to help customers who are looking to sell their electronics: evaluating the machine, testing it, and giving them a fair offer. It isn't the core of the job, but it is part of it, and a lead who can talk to a customer as confidently as they handle a logic board is exactly who we're looking for.

Who We Are

Computer Overhauls is a small, tight-knit team of passionate professionals—and NYC's go-to destination for buying and selling premium consumer electronics. From Macs and PCs to iPhones, iPads, drones, and cameras, we handle it all with expertise and care. Our reputation speaks for itself: we've been spotlighted by the New York Times, USA Today, and Entrepreneur, and proudly earned a spot on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing companies in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Join us, and become part of a celebrated legacy!

What You'll Do

  • Own the intake pipeline for every device we purchase: wipe, restore, test, triage, and repair—from a single MacBook Pro to a bulk drop-off of fifty laptops—and keep it moving.
  • Diagnose and repair Mac and PC laptops from 2018 through the latest 2026 models: displays, keyboards and top cases, batteries, trackpads, speakers, cameras, charge ports, system boards, and logic boards.
  • Work confidently on high-value machines that can easily be $3000+ devices —MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, ThinkPad, Latitude, Surface, Alienware, and more—where a damaged connectortool costs real money.
  • Know the Apple-specific rules cold: glued batteries, riveted keyboards, serialized displays and Touch ID, True Tone calibration, and when a genuine part plus System Configuration is the only right answer.
  • Run the refurb line: PXE/MDT network imaging for Windows 11 machines, DFU revive and restore for Apple Silicon and T2 Macs, firmware updates, service tags, activation, and encryption handled before anything goes back out.
  • Make the call on every intake: part swap, logic board, refer out, or no fix—and quote it accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, ESD-safe bench and keep parts, screws, and documentation organized.
  • Help retail customers selling their electronics when the front office needs a hand (about 15% of your time): evaluate, test, and make the offer.
  • Mentor the front-office team on technical questions and step in on the toughest customer repairs.

What You Bring

  • Experience:
  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on laptop repair across both Mac and PC (Apple Authorized Service Provider, Self Service Repair, independent repair shop, or Genius Bar hardware experience is a big plus!).
  • A track record of clean, complete repairs on premium machines—screens, keyboards, batteries, trackpads, ports, boards—not just reinstalling Windows.
  • Technical Know-How:
  • Fluent with the full MacBook lineup from 2018 through the latest 2026 models including Intel, T2, and Apple Silicon: what's glued, what's riveted, what's soldered, and what's paired.
  • Equally fluent on the PC side: ThinkPad, Dell, HP, Surface, and gaming laptops, including liquid-metal cooling, BIOS recovery, and panel sourcing by part number.
  • Comfortable with Windows deployment (PXE boot, MDT/WDS, UEFI and Secure Boot, TPM requirements) and Apple restore tooling (DFU mode, Apple Configurator, Revive vs. Restore).
  • Can identify a model from its number, pick the right driver for the screw in front of you, and spot liquid damage, backlight failure, or a cracked hinge mount at a glance.
  • Customer Comfort:
  • Able to explain a device's condition and value to a customer plainly and politely—in person and over the phone—when you're called to the front.
  • Reliability:
  • Punctual and dependable—our small team counts on you!
  • Comfortable working full shifts without smoking or vaping (we're a smoke-free workplace).
  • Dog-friendly attitude (our office Golden Retriever might just become your new coworker!).

How We Hire

If you are selected, step one is a short online skills assessment: a timed series of real repair images and questions, the kind of things you'd see on the bench on any given day. It takes about 15 minutes and you can do it from home on your schedule.

Work Schedule

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Saturday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Closed Thursday & Sunday
