This role plays a key part in managing daily HR functions, ensuring compliance with California labor laws and cannabis industry regulations, and helping foster a positive, compliant, and high-performance workplace culture. The ideal candidate will have direct HR experience in the cannabis or retail sector , strong working knowledge of California employment law, and a flexible approach to support our diverse worksites. This position is based out of our Sun Valley office , with regular travel required to our retail, cultivation, and distribution facilities across Southern California. Key Responsibilities: Administer and maintain HR policies, procedures, and programs across all departments, ensuring alignment with California labor law, OSHA regulations. Manage full-cycle recruiting for various roles (retail, cultivation, operations, corporate), including job postings, candidate screening, compliant background checks (per Fair Chance Act), and onboarding. Conduct onboarding and new hire orientations with a focus on compliance. Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in both HRIS and physical formats, following CPRA privacy laws and state record retention requirements. Partner with Finance to process payroll accurately and timely, ensuring wage & hour compliance, including proper tracking of breaks, overtime, and shift differentials. Act as the primary HR contact for employees and managers, responding to employee relations concerns and providing timely and professional resolution. Travel regularly to various locations to meet with staff and leadership, conduct check-ins, facilitate trainings, and support onsite HR needs. Prepare and process payroll data in coordination with the finance team. Coordinate mandatory compliance training (harassment prevention, workplace safety, DCC-required topics) and deliver HR presentations as needed. Guide managers on performance management processes, progressive discipline, and employee development. Stay up-to-date on California labor laws and cannabis compliance regulations, making recommendations to update policies and practices accordingly. Track and report on key HR metrics, including turnover, retention, compliance trainings, and headcount. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. HR experience in the cannabis, retail, or manufacturing industries required. Cannabis industry HR experience preferred. Deep understanding of California employment laws, wage orders, and industry-specific compliance needs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust and rapport across multiple teams. Experience managing sensitive employee relations situations with discretion and professionalism. Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability and willingness to travel regularly to company sites across Southern California. PHR, SHRM-CP, or cannabis-related certifications are a plus. Must meet all legal requirements to work in the cannabis industry in California (including passing state-mandated background checks). Work Environment & Travel: This is a hybrid role based in our Sun Valley, CA office , with regular travel to retail stores, cultivation, and distribution facilities throughout Southern California. Must be comfortable working in retail, warehouse, and cultivation environments and performing occasional site inspections. Flexible hours may be required depending on business needs (including evenings or weekends).
