HR Manager
Walker Singleton Group is one of the North of England's leading independent Chartered Surveying and Estate Agency businesses, and we're looking for an experienced, personable and proactive HR Manager to take ownership of our people function. With around 65 employees across the business, this is a fantastic opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys working closely with people, building trusted relationships and helping managers and employees get the best from their working environment. We're looking for someone who can really get under the skin of the business, understand what our managers and teams need and help us continue to develop the way we manage, support and develop our people. The Opportunity This is a standalone HR role, giving you the opportunity to take ownership and make your mark. You'll be the first point of contact for managers and employees across the full HR lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through to employee relations, development and performance. A key part of your role will be coaching and mentoring our managers, particularly newly promoted managers and senior employees, helping them develop the confidence and skills to manage people effectively. You'll be a trusted sounding board, someone managers can come to for practical advice, guidance and support when dealing with people matters. You'll help them understand not just what they need to do, but how to do it well. You'll also play a key role in helping us develop a stronger performance culture across the business. This will include introducing meaningful KPIs, helping managers use them effectively and redesigning our existing performance review process so that appraisals become a valuable conversation about performance, development and future goals. We already have external HR and employment law support in place, so you won't be expected to be an employment law specialist. You will, however, need a good practical understanding of UK employment law and employee relations, with the confidence to deal with day-to-day issues and know when something needs to be referred for specialist advice. What you will be doing Every day will be different, but your responsibilities will include: Taking ownership of the day-to-day HR function across the business, providing a professional, approachable and practical service to managers and employees. Acting as the first point of contact for HR and employee relations matters, including performance, absence, disciplinaries and grievances. Coaching and mentoring managers through people issues, helping them develop their confidence and capability as people managers. Providing ongoing support to newly promoted managers and senior employees as they develop their leadership skills. Building strong relationships with managers across the business and becoming a trusted HR partner and sounding board. Supporting recruitment from initial job specification and advertising through to interviews, offers and contracts. Managing effective onboarding for new employees and ensuring new starters have a positive experience from day one. Managing leaver processes, including exit interviews and gathering feedback to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Maintaining accurate employee records and using Access PeopleHR to manage employee data, absence, reporting and performance processes. Introducing and embedding meaningful KPIs, working with managers to establish clear expectations and measures of performance. Reviewing and redesigning the Company's annual appraisal process, creating a more streamlined and effective approach for employees and managers. Ensuring performance reviews become meaningful conversations focused on performance, development and future objectives. Supporting managers in setting clear objectives and following up on performance and development throughout the year. Providing regular, concise people updates and reporting to the Equity Partners, highlighting key trends, issues and opportunities. Keeping HR policies, processes and the staff handbook up to date and ensuring they remain practical, relevant and compliant. Keeping up to date with changes to UK employment law and advising managers on relevant developments, including the phased Employment Rights Act reforms. Working alongside our external HR and employment law advisors where specialist advice is required. Liaising with our internal payroll team to ensure employee changes and information are communicated accurately and on time. Maintaining high standards of confidentiality and professionalism at all times. What we are looking for We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with people. You'll be an experienced HR professional with a good generalist background and the confidence to operate autonomously. You won't need to know every answer, but you'll need the judgement to find the right one and the confidence to know when to seek specialist advice. You'll bring: Previous experience in a generalist HR role, ideally within an SME or similarly sized business. Good practical knowledge of UK employment law and employee relations. Experience dealing with employee relations matters confidently and professionally. Demonstrable experience coaching, mentoring or developing managers, ideally including newly promoted or first-time people managers. A genuine interest in developing managers and helping them become better people leaders. Experience of developing, implementing or improving performance review and appraisal processes. An understanding of how to introduce and use KPIs and objectives to improve performance and accountability. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships at all levels. A personable and approachable style — someone employees and managers feel comfortable coming to for advice. Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload independently. The confidence to challenge constructively when required, while maintaining positive working relationships. A practical, commercial approach to HR — focused on finding solutions rather than creating unnecessary process. Good Microsoft Office skills and ideally experience using a cloud-based HR system. CIPD Level 5 qualified, and experience using Access PeopleHR or comparable systems would be an advantage, but we're much more interested in your experience, approach and ability to make a difference. Most importantly... We're looking for someone who is personable, pragmatic and genuinely interested in people. Someone who can build trust with a newly promoted manager, sit down with a director and challenge their approach when needed, and provide employees with a supportive and professional HR service. You'll need to be comfortable working independently and taking ownership, but you won't be on your own. We have external HR and employment law support available when specialist input is needed, giving you the freedom to focus on the practical, people-focused side of the role. Why join us? At Walker Singleton, we believe in rewarding and investing in our people. Here's what we offer: £35,000–£40,000 FTE, dependent on experience 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays Birthday Off Long service award leave Enhanced family-friendly policies Employee Discount on Estate Agency Services Paid Volunteering Day Seasonal Events Recruitment Referral Programme Supportive and collaborative team environment Working pattern and location This is a part-time role of around 20 hours per week, but we're flexible on how those hours are structured for the right candidate.
