HR Generalist
Reports to: Executive Director Employment Type : Hourly, ~8-10 hours/week Location: On-site at Circus Center (755 Frederick Street, San Francisco) / hybrid remote Compensation : $35-45/hr Benefits: Sick time, commuter benefits, and discounts on classes in accordance with Circus Center current policies TO APPLY: Please submit a cover letter and resume Position Summary The Human Resources (HR) Generalist is responsible for supporting the organization’s human resources functions. The person in this position serves as the lead human resources liaison for staff and contractors, manages employee benefits, drives personnel procedure in accordance with state and local laws, maintains proper and timely employee records, and manages administration onboarding of new employees. The position is an hourly part-time position. Duties Include: Oversee adherence to HR policies and procedures in compliance with current state and local law Develop new HR protocols, procedures, and systems, and drive their implementation Serve as HR contact for all personnel Onboard new employees, offboard employees, and disseminate policies Manage employee benefits and perks Maintain employee files, ensuring the confidentiality and accuracy of employee information Assist with payroll Reconcile and implement policies regarding vacation, flex time, and legally mandated sick time Required Qualifications: Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience). Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on HR experience, preferably in a generalist or operations capacity. Experience in a small-to-midsize nonprofit organization. Experience administering employee benefits (health insurance, 401k, perks). Legal/Compliance Knowledge: Demonstrated working knowledge of California employment laws and federal regulations (e.g., FMLA, FLSA, ADA, COBRA) as they apply to day-to-day HR administration. Systems Proficiency: Experience using HRIS/payroll platforms (e.g., Gusto) and proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace. Confidentiality: Proven ability to handle highly sensitive employee information with absolute discretion and sound judgment. Detail Orientation: Strong organizational skills with a track record of maintaining accurate, audit-ready employee files and records. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly disseminate policies and interact with staff at all levels. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to various components of an office environment such as fluorescent lighting, pollen, dust, recycled air, cooling fans, VDTs, semi-enclosed areas, seasonal warmer/cooler temperatures and office noise.
