Head of Technology

Relocation required to Austin, Texas after 12-18 months in Palm Beach County Florida| 20 - 50 % travel | Base salary $250,000+ | Competitive benefits

About the role

A private family with several properties is looking for someone to take ownership of their technology, end to end. Their needs span personal devices, residential systems, and growing family office/enterprise solutioning.

You would own the strategy, the standards, the service model, the budget, the vendor relationships, and the long-term roadmap. You would be the person the family trusts to make the technology in their lives simply work and be secure.

We are not hiring for a title or a year count. We want someone who has already done this kind of work, at a meaningful scale, and done it well. If you have owned a complex technology environment, led people and outside partners, managed real budgets, and earned the trust of a principal or senior executive, we would like to hear from you. What matters most is a track record of showing up, taking ownership, and getting results.

You do not need to be the deepest expert on every platform. You do need to understand how systems connect, make sound calls, ask the right questions, bring in the right specialists/vendors, and stay accountable for how things turn out.

What you'd be here to do

  • Build one cohesive technology program across the family's homes, travel, personal operations, and related environments.
  • Learn how the Principal and family actually live, work, communicate, travel, and entertain, and turn that into technology that feels effortless to them.
  • Set clear standards for reliability, cybersecurity, privacy, documentation, maintenance, lifecycle planning, and service.
  • Stand up a support model that works: internal resources, specialist vendors, backup coverage, escalation paths, and on-call.
  • Be the family's voice with designers, architects, contractors, integrators, security professionals, consultants, and technology providers.

Key responsibilities

Strategy and leadership

  • Own the technology roadmap and operating model, and keep investments lined up with the family's needs, preferences, risk tolerance, and long-term plans.
  • Advise the Principal and leadership on decisions, new capabilities, security, trade-offs, and where to spend.
  • Put clear standards, policies, documentation, and decision processes in place across properties and partners.
  • Build annual and multiyear budgets covering operations, projects, connectivity, licensing, maintenance, replacement cycles, resilience, and new ideas.

The family's day-to-day experience

  • Provide discreet, anticipatory, high-touch support for the Principal, family, guests, and senior staff.
  • Learn each person's preferences and habits so devices, connectivity, communications, entertainment, and home systems are ready wherever they are.
  • Explain technology plainly and briefly. Bring recommendations, not jargon.
  • Handle sensitive or critical issues yourself when it matters, and make sure the routine work runs through a dependable support structure.

Infrastructure, security, and resilience

  • Oversee wired and wireless networks, internet, cloud services, endpoints, communications, identity and access, cybersecurity, and data protection.
  • Put redundancy, monitoring, backup connectivity, disaster recovery, escalation, and contingency plans in place for each property and use case.
  • Work with qualified security and technology specialists to protect the family's privacy, information, devices, homes, communications, and access.
  • Keep accurate documentation, inventories, credential-management practices, service histories, support contacts, and lifecycle plans.

Residential and integrated systems

  • Lead across AV, home automation, lighting, climate, communications, surveillance, access control, energy, and other connected property systems.
  • Make sure systems are intuitive, supportable, secure, documented, and built around how the family actually lives, not technology for its own sake.
  • Lead troubleshooting across interconnected systems, pulling in integrators and specialists while owning the user experience yourself.

Projects and capital improvements

  • Be the family's senior technology representative on construction, renovation, refit, and maritime projects.
  • Turn how the family operates into clear design criteria, scopes, standards, and acceptance requirements.
  • Review designs, bids, contracts, budgets, schedules, and change orders; spot gaps and risks; give leadership clear recommendations.
  • Make sure systems are commissioned, tested, documented, supported, and fully ready before the family uses them or a project is handed over.

Team, vendors, and budget

  • Select, direct, and hold accountable integrators, managed-service providers, consultants, contractors, and specialist vendors.
  • Build or recommend the internal and external team needed for consistent support across locations and time zones.
  • Negotiate scopes, pricing, service levels, and contracts; track performance; resolve problems decisively.
  • Keep disciplined financial oversight and keep leadership informed on priorities, risks, variances, and what's coming.

What we're looking for

We care far more about what you have actually done than how long you have been doing it. The strongest candidates will be able to point to real environments they owned and real outcomes they delivered.

  • A proven record of owning a complex technology environment in a similar role, with direct accountability for strategy, budgets, vendors, projects, service delivery, risk, and resilience. You can walk us through what you built, what went wrong, and how you handled it.
  • Experience supporting a principal, family, or senior executive in a family office, private household, executive office, or comparable high-touch setting, where discretion, judgment, and anticipating needs were part of the job.
  • Broad working fluency across enterprise and residential technology: networking, cybersecurity, endpoints, cloud, communications, AV, automation, and integrated property systems. Depth in a few, enough in the rest to lead the right people.
  • A history of building things from the ground up: strategy, operating standards, budgets, lifecycle plans, service models, and contingency coverage that held up over time.
  • Experience running vendors and projects, reviewing technical proposals, and making good calls without having to do every specialist task yourself.
  • Self-driven and highly motivated. You take ownership without being asked, follow through, and hold a high bar for yourself and the people around you.
  • Experience with multiple properties, construction or renovation projects, maritime environments, or geographically distributed operations is a strong plus.
  • Degrees, training, and certifications are welcome, but your judgment, your track record, and the results you can show us matter more than any credential.

Who you are

  • Polished and credible. You can sit in a room with senior leaders, advisers, designers, contractors, and technical experts and represent the family with confidence.
  • Consistently professional in how you present yourself and how you conduct business, with a natural feel for what is expected when you represent a principal and a family office.
  • Perceptive and emotionally intelligent. You read people well, communicate clearly, and adjust to different personalities, settings, and levels of technical comfort.
  • Service-minded and anticipatory. You are curious about how people live and work, and you take real satisfaction in making their technology disappear into the background.
  • Calm, resourceful, and decisive when things go sideways, and comfortable moving between big-picture decisions and hands-on troubleshooting in the same afternoon.
  • Discreet, trustworthy, and low-ego, at ease in a private environment where confidentiality and professional boundaries are non-negotiable.
  • Organized and accountable, with the energy and follow-through to build a sophisticated program from scratch and keep it running.

Location, travel, and work model

The long-term home for this role is Austin, Texas, and you will need to relocate to the Austin area. During the initial onboarding and build-out phase you may be based elsewhere, as long as you can travel roughly 20-50 percent of the time. Early travel will include significant time in Florida, plus other domestic and international travel as needed.

This is a high-responsibility role supporting an active private family across several locations. Evenings, weekends, and urgent calls will come up. You will have the authority and resources to set up backup coverage, vendor escalation, and a sensible on-call model, but you need to be personally willing to travel often and to step in when a situation calls for senior involvement.

  • Base salary starts at $250,000+ and goes up with experience, plus a competitive benefits package. Verifiable references and a comprehensive background screening are required.
