We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Head of Software Development / Senior Full-Stack Developer to help maintain, improve, and expand our technology platforms while providing technical leadership to our development team.

Position Overview

This is a hands-on technical leadership position for an experienced software engineer who is equally comfortable writing code, managing complex infrastructure, troubleshooting production issues, and leading development initiatives.

The successful candidate will help oversee two primary technology environments:

• Internal Business Applications: Our proprietary internal software platform, built around Microsoft SQL Server, which supports essential business operations, order processing, and related workflows.
• E-Commerce & Web Infrastructure: Our custom-built e-commerce websites, backend applications, APIs, databases, Linux servers, and associated integrations.

We are looking for a dependable, resourceful professional who can take ownership of technical challenges, work effectively with existing custom-built applications, and deliver practical improvements that support our continued growth.

This is not a purely managerial position. Strong hands-on technical capabilities are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development & Technical Leadership

• Lead the maintenance, troubleshooting, enhancement, and modernization of our proprietary applications and e-commerce platforms.
• Actively participate in backend programming, debugging, application development, and code reviews.
• Provide technical direction and oversight to internal developers and external technical resources.
• Work closely with company leadership to prioritize development initiatives and translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Establish sound development practices, documentation, testing procedures, and deployment processes.
• Evaluate existing architecture and recommend improvements that increase reliability, performance, security, and scalability.
• Manage development priorities and help ensure projects are delivered on schedule.

Linux Server Administration & Infrastructure

• Administer, maintain, secure, and troubleshoot production Linux server environments.
• Monitor server health, resource utilization, uptime, and application performance.
• Diagnose and resolve server, application, networking, and infrastructure issues.
• Configure and optimize web servers and supporting services.
• Implement appropriate server security, patching, monitoring, backup, and recovery practices.
• Support application deployments, production releases, and infrastructure improvements.
• Respond to urgent production issues and help minimize service interruptions.

Backend Development & API Integrations

• Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot backend application functionality.
• Build and support JSON/REST APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
• Diagnose application errors, integration failures, and performance bottlenecks.
• Work with existing custom codebases and improve their maintainability and reliability.
• Support integrations between e-commerce websites, internal applications, vendors, and third-party services.

Database Development & Optimization

• Work extensively with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and other SQL-based database environments.
• Troubleshoot database performance, inefficient queries, and data-related application issues.
• Develop and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and database integrations.
• Support database architecture, data integrity, security, and reliability.
• Identify opportunities to improve database and application performance.

E-Commerce Platform Support

• Maintain and improve established, custom-built e-commerce websites.
• Troubleshoot production issues affecting website functionality, performance, and customer experience.
• Support web server configuration, application deployment, and ongoing production operations.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to implement new website features, integrations, and operational improvements.
• Help ensure our platforms remain secure, reliable, scalable, and available.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software development and/or systems engineering experience.
• Demonstrated experience leading software development projects or technical teams.
• Advanced Linux server administration, troubleshooting, security, and performance optimization skills.
• Strong backend programming skills, including the ability to understand, debug, and improve existing applications.
• Significant experience with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SQL development, and database performance troubleshooting.
• Experience developing, maintaining, and integrating JSON/REST APIs.
• Strong understanding of web server configuration, deployment processes, and production application support.
• Experience supporting established, custom-built e-commerce websites or other business-critical web applications.
• Familiarity with application architecture, version control, testing, and software deployment practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex issues spanning application code, databases, servers, and integrations.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with a team.
• Dependability, accountability, and willingness to respond to urgent production issues when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience modernizing legacy applications without disrupting ongoing business operations.
• Familiarity with e-commerce order processing, ERP systems, inventory management, and payment integrations.
• Experience managing production web infrastructure and improving website security.
• Familiarity with cloud hosting, infrastructure monitoring, automation, and CI/CD processes.
• Experience in a growing, entrepreneurial, mid-sized company.
• Proven ability to balance hands-on technical contributions with team leadership and project management.

You don't need a large team or elaborate processes to be effective. You understand how to prioritize work, diagnose issues, make sound technical decisions, and deliver results.

You are comfortable moving between high-level architectural discussions and hands-on technical work, whether that involves optimizing a SQL query, debugging an API integration, troubleshooting a Linux server, or helping a developer resolve an application issue.

You take ownership of problems, communicate clearly, and understand that reliability, responsiveness, and business continuity are essential in an e-commerce environment.

• Establish clear development priorities and consistent delivery practices.
• Deliver meaningful improvements to our internal business applications and customer-facing websites.
• Develop a practical roadmap for improving our technology as the company grows.

Pay: $130,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
