Role Overview We are seeking a technically strong, commercially minded Head of Commercial Operations to lead the delivery of our Commercial Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) projects, alongside our Octopus Energy Services (OES) contract. This is an opportunity to take a senior operational position within a growing energy and renewables business at an important stage of its development with a remit to shape the processes, people and delivery structure required to support the continued growth of our commercial and residential propositions. Reporting to the Commercial Director, the role owns projects from contract handover through mobilisation, electrical design coordination, installation, commissioning and commercial close-out, acting as the senior operational and electrical authority for the function. It will suit a qualified electrical professional with a track record of leading residential and commercial solar and storage delivery, combining people leadership, technical assurance and commercial control. Key Responsibilities Commercial Solar & BESS - Own the end-to-end delivery of Commercial Solar PV and BESS projects from handover through to energisation, commissioning and close-out, maintaining visibility of costs, forecast margins, variations and commercial risk throughout. - Review and formally accept handovers, challenging electrical design, DC/AC configuration, protection, metering and cost assumptions before mobilisation. - Oversee electrical design and technical coordination with the Technical Manager: string and inverter design, LV distribution, protection, earthing and cable calculations. - Own the grid connection process, including G98/G99 applications, DNO liaison, witness testing and energisation. - Lead mobilisation and delivery planning: programme, labour, subcontractors, procurement, site logistics and project controls. - Ensure inspection, testing and commissioning meet BS 7671 and manufacturer requirements, with complete certification and O&M documentation issued at handover. Octopus Energy Services contract - Take operational ownership of the OES delivery contract, ensuring performance meets contractual, customer, quality and compliance requirements. - Manage day-to-day delivery against contract KPIs, leading and supporting the Project Coordinator who schedules installation crews. - Maintain electrical quality and compliance controls, covering certification, inspection and testing standards, technical audits and defect close-out. - Act as the senior operational contact for the client, and ensure completed works are closed out accurately to support prompt invoicing. Leadership and operational governance - Lead, manage and develop the coordination team, engineers and approved subcontract installation partners. - Direct the Technical Manager to keep technical resource focused on operational priorities. - Establish project controls and reporting routines, updating the Commercial Director on programme, cost, margin, risk, quality, health and safety and customer performance. - Work with Sales, Commercial, Technical, Procurement, Finance and Compliance, developing scalable processes and electrical standards as volumes grow. Candidate Requirements - Time-served electrician with significant experience leading commercial solar PV, battery storage or electrical contracting delivery. - Strong technical knowledge of commercial PV and BESS: DC string design, inverters, LV distribution, protection, earthing, metering, monitoring and commissioning. - Working knowledge of BS 7671, G98/G99 and DNO requirements, CDM and the IET Codes of Practice for gridconnected PV and electrical energy storage. - Proven experience of mobilisation, programme management, procurement and subcontractor management across concurrent projects - Strong commercial awareness, including budgets, gross margin, cost control, variations and forecasting. - Confident leading teams and clients, with the judgement to challenge incomplete handovers and identify technical and commercial risk early. Qualifications - NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, or equivalent time-served qualification (essential). - Current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, C&G 2382, and strong working knowledge of BS 7671 (essential). - C&G 2391 inspection, testing and certification, or equivalent (strongly preferred). - Solar PV and battery storage qualifications, such as C&G 2399 and C&G 2919. - HNC/HND or degree in Electrical Engineering, and APM or PRINCE2, desirable. - SMSTS, ECS Gold Card or CSCS Manager Card, and a full UK Driving Licence Personal Attributes - Structured, accountable and solutions focused, with the drive to bring order to a growing delivery function. - Technically credible and commercially minded, at ease with board-level reporting and site-level electrical detail. - Clear and confident communicator with clients, colleagues, suppliers and subcontractors. - Committed to safety, compliance, quality and continuous improvement. Performance Measures - On-time delivery, resource utilisation and completion-to-invoice timescales. - Gross margin against tender and forecast, with cost and labour variance. - Health and safety, electrical compliance, defects and snagging levels. - Contract and audit performance, variation recovery and close-out documentation.
