We believe the sacrifice made by first responders, and by their families, should never be forgotten. Through financial assistance, community support, remembrance initiatives, and other programs, we stand beside families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Position Overview We are seeking an experienced, resourceful, and highly motivated Grant Writer & Fundraising Specialist to help expand the financial resources available to support our mission. This is a hands-on fundraising position, not a Development Manager role. The primary focus will be researching funding opportunities, preparing and submitting grant applications, and supporting targeted fundraising initiatives that generate revenue for the organization. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer and researcher who can work independently, identify promising sources of funding, manage multiple deadlines, and translate our mission and impact into compelling funding requests. Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week Position Type: Part-time Location: Walnut Creek, CA Reports To: Operations Manager Compensation: $28-30 per hour Key Responsibilities Grant Research & Prospecting - Research and identify grant opportunities from private foundations, corporations, community foundations, government agencies, and other funding sources. - Identify funders whose priorities align with supporting first responders, surviving families, public safety, emergency services, grief and family assistance, community resilience, and related causes. - Evaluate potential opportunities based on eligibility, funding priorities, award size, deadlines, competitiveness, and organizational fit. - Develop and maintain a pipeline of prospective grant opportunities. Grant Writing & Applications - Prepare compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, applications, and supporting materials. - Tailor each proposal to the priorities and requirements of the prospective funder. - Work with organizational leadership to gather program information, financial data, budgets, impact statistics, testimonials, and other materials needed for applications. - Coordinate and submit complete applications by required deadlines. - Prepare grant reports, renewals, and other follow-up materials as required by funders. - Maintain organized records of applications, awards, declines, deadlines, reporting requirements, and future opportunities. Fundraising Support - Research and recommend additional fundraising opportunities that complement the organization's grant strategy. - Assist with fundraising campaigns, sponsorship opportunities, corporate giving initiatives, and targeted donor outreach. - Help develop compelling fundraising materials, sponsorship requests, appeals, and cases for support. - Identify potential corporate and community partners whose missions align with supporting first responders and their families. - Support special fundraising initiatives as needed, with an emphasis on activities that directly generate or expand revenue. What This Position Is — and Is Not This position is designed for someone who enjoys doing the work of fundraising: researching opportunities, writing applications, pursuing funding, developing fundraising materials, and helping turn opportunities into financial support. This is not a Development Director or Development Manager position and does not carry responsibility for managing a development department, supervising staff, or overseeing broad organizational administration. Success in this role will be measured primarily by the quality and volume of qualified funding opportunities identified and pursued, timely and compelling grant submissions, growth of the organization's funding pipeline, and contributions to successful fundraising efforts. Qualifications We are looking for candidates who have: - Demonstrated experience writing grants for nonprofit organizations. - A successful track record of preparing competitive grant proposals and funding applications. - Excellent research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills. - Strong ability to communicate an organization's mission and impact in a compelling and respectful way. - Ability to identify and evaluate new funding opportunities independently. - Excellent organization and deadline-management skills. - Ability to manage multiple applications and projects simultaneously. - Experience working with online grant portals and researching foundations, corporations, and government funding opportunities. - Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with organizational leadership. - High degree of professionalism, discretion, accuracy, and attention to detail. - Experience fundraising for organizations serving first responders, veterans, military families, public safety professionals, surviving families, or similar mission-driven populations. - Experience with corporate giving and sponsorship programs. - Familiarity with California-based foundations and philanthropic organizations. - Experience with state, federal, county, or municipal grant opportunities. - Experience developing fundraising appeals, sponsorship packages, or donor communications. A specific college degree is less important to us than demonstrated ability, strong writing, sound judgment, initiative, and a track record of successful fundraising or grant work. The Person We're Looking For Our mission involves families who have experienced profound loss. The right candidate will understand the importance of communicating their stories with dignity, sensitivity, and respect. We are looking for someone who is proactive; someone who doesn't simply wait for grant opportunities to arrive but actively searches for new ways to fund our mission. You should be comfortable taking ownership of projects, working independently, meeting deadlines, and communicating clearly about what information or support you need from our team. Most importantly, you should believe in our mission of honoring fallen first responders and standing behind the families they leave behind. How to Apply Please submit: - A current résumé; - A brief cover letter describing your grant-writing and fundraising experience; - One or two relevant grant-writing or fundraising samples, if available; and - A brief description of grants or other funding you have successfully helped secure. Pay: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour Expected hours: 15.0 – 20.0 per week Work Location: Hybrid remote in Walnut Creek, CA 94596
