General Manager — Lead the Team. Build a Winning Store.

Stu’s Home Improvement Outlet | Dubuque, Iowa | Full-Time, On-Site

We’re looking for our head coach.

A winning football team needs a coach who recruits talent, develops players, builds a playbook, makes adjustments, and takes responsibility for the scoreboard.

That’s the kind of General Manager we’re looking for at Stu’s Home Improvement Outlet .

We sell appliances, furniture, flooring, and home improvement products. Our next GM will lead the day-to-day business, build a strong sales culture, improve the customer experience, and drive profitable growth in improving monthly store sales.

You’ll work directly with the owner, giving him the ability to focus on purchasing, vendor relationships, and business growth while you lead the store.

Build the Roster

Your first responsibility is putting the right people in the right positions.

  • Evaluate the current team and identify strengths, training needs, and performance gaps.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and retain motivated salespeople and dependable support staff.
  • Set clear expectations for every position.
  • Address underperformance promptly and make personnel changes when necessary.
  • Develop future leaders who can take on greater responsibility as we grow.

Run the Practices

Game-day results come from daily preparation. Training must be part of how this store operates.

  • Lead daily sales huddles and regular hands-on training.
  • Coach product knowledge, customer discovery, financing presentations, objection handling, and closing.
  • Review sales pipelines, customer conversations, missed opportunities, and follow-up activity.
  • Use role-playing and direct feedback to improve performance.
  • Hold salespeople accountable for daily social media posts, lead responses, appointments, and CRM follow-up.

You must be able to demonstrate the skills you expect your team to use.

Build and Execute the Playbook

Create a consistent process from the first customer inquiry through delivery and follow-up.

  • Establish clear standards for greeting customers, presenting products, asking for the sale, and involving management.
  • Keep Lead Connect/CRM activity current, organized, and actionable.
  • Make sure every lead has an owner and a next step.
  • Build a customer turnover process so salespeople bring you into opportunities before customers leave.
  • Enforce pricing and discount policies while protecting margins.
  • Turn successful practices into repeatable systems the entire team can follow.

Call the Plays and Make Adjustments

You’ll be active on the sales floor, watching what is happening and responding quickly.

  • Help close sales and coach employees through challenging customer conversations.
  • Identify why customers are leaving without buying and address the causes.
  • Adjust staffing, floor coverage, merchandising, and promotions based on results.
  • Set daily, weekly, and monthly goals for the store and individual employees.
  • Take ownership of problems and follow through until they are resolved.

Fill the Stands

A strong team needs customer traffic. You’ll work with our marketing team to turn attention into store visits and sales.

  • Plan promotions, sales events, community outreach, and radio remotes.
  • Coordinate social media, video content, Facebook Marketplace, and paid advertising.
  • Make sure inquiries receive fast, professional responses.
  • Track which campaigns produce appointments, purchases, and profitable revenue.
  • Develop online sales channels, including eBay, into consistent sources of revenue.

Own the Entire Field

Your responsibility extends beyond the sales team.

  • Coordinate warehouse preparation, inventory accuracy, deliveries, and customer communication.
  • Keep the showroom clean, priced, organized, and ready to sell.
  • Manage schedules, payroll, operating expenses, and store profitability.
  • Understand the P&L and use it to guide decisions.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and improve the practices that cause complaints.
  • Build a culture where promises are kept and customers feel taken care of.

Know the Scoreboard

You’ll be accountable for measurable improvement in:

  • Store revenue and gross profit.
  • Sales conversion and average ticket.
  • Individual salesperson productivity.
  • Lead response, follow-up, and appointment results.
  • Discounting and payroll control.
  • Customer satisfaction and reviews.
  • Inventory accuracy and delivery performance.
  • Marketing results and online sales.

Revenue matters. So do profitability, customer trust, and the strength of the team you build.

What You Bring

  • A proven record of leading and developing a sales team.
  • Experience in furniture, appliances, automotive, or another results-driven sales environment.
  • Strong personal selling and closing skills.
  • Experience recruiting, coaching, and addressing performance issues.
  • Practical knowledge of CRM systems, financing, marketing, and retail operations.
  • The ability to understand financial reports and manage expenses.
  • Professional communication, sound judgment, and consistent follow-through.
  • Willingness to work weekends, busy sales periods, and the hours needed to establish a strong operation.

Be prepared to discuss your actual results: team size, sales growth, profitability, recruiting successes, and how you improved an underperforming business.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to build a team, establish a winning culture, and earn greater responsibility as the business grows. Compensation will reflect experience and include performance incentives tied to clearly defined business results.

Ready to Lead?

Apply with your résumé and a brief explanation of:

  • The strongest sales team you have built or led.
  • The measurable results that team achieved.
  • Your first priorities when taking over an underperforming store.

If you can recruit the talent, teach the fundamentals, make the tough calls, and lead from the sales floor, we want to talk with you.
