Executive Director – Outpatient Behavioral Health (Growth & Turnaround) Columbus, Ohio · Full-Time · On-Site

About This Role

We're building a serious outpatient behavioral health organization offering substance use disorder and mental health services across PHP, IOP, and OP levels of care. We're looking for an Executive Director who has built, grown, or turned around a program before and wants to do it again.

This isn't a maintenance role. If you want to keep things steady, avoid pressure, or lead mostly from meetings, this won't be a fit. If you want to own growth, raise performance, and build something that matters, keep reading.

What You'll Do

You won't just oversee this organization. You'll run it, hands-on and in the business every day. You will:

  • Grow admissions and census across all levels of care
  • Build a high-performing team that's accountable and aligned
  • Fix what's broken, including intake, no-shows, and inefficient workflows
  • Develop active referral pipelines with hospitals, detox programs, and community partners
  • Own operations and results, taking the organization from where it is today to where it should be

What Success Looks Like (First 3–6 Months)

  • Admissions are consistent, tracked, and growing
  • Referral sources are active and producing
  • Staff are accountable and working toward shared goals
  • Operations run tighter, faster, and more effectively
  • The program is growing by design, not by chance

At the end of it, you should be able to point to the results and say, "I built that."

Your Areas of Ownership

  • Full operational leadership across clinical, administrative, and growth functions
  • Census growth across PHP, IOP, and OP services
  • Hiring, team development, and performance management
  • Referral development and community partnerships
  • Regulatory compliance (Ohio Medicaid, OhioMHAS, and accreditation standards) as a foundation for sustainable growth
  • Budget management, performance metrics, and P&L direction

Who We're Looking For

You're a strong fit if you:

  • Have personally driven measurable growth in a behavioral health or healthcare setting
  • Understand both clinical operations and the business and revenue side
  • Are comfortable being measured on numbers and outcomes
  • Move quickly, solve problems, and take ownership without waiting to be told
  • Lead people well and hold them accountable when it counts

You're probably not a fit if you:

  • Have maintained programs but never grown one
  • Prefer to avoid performance metrics or accountability
  • Need frequent direction to move forward

Requirements

  • 2+ years of leadership experience in behavioral health, SUD, or healthcare
  • A proven track record of growth, turnaround, or scale
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and drive performance

A clinical license is a plus, but it isn't a substitute for operational ability.

Compensation

  • Competitive base salary
  • Performance bonuses tied directly to growth and results
  • Significant upside for the right operator
