Engineering Team Leader Job Description

As the Design Engineering Team Leader, you are responsible for leading the engineering design team and ensuring that projects are completed in accordance with schedules agreed with Head Office and/or clients. The role requires excellent technical knowledge of 3D design, strong project-management skills, and the ability to lead the team with minimal supervision from senior management.

The Team Leader is involved in the initial conceptualisation, design, development, and management of the company’s projects worldwide. As the most experienced member of the team, the Team Leader undertakes the most complex design work and shares technical knowledge with junior team members to strengthen the team’s overall design capability.

The Team Leader must ensure that all team members, including the Team Leader, comply with company policies and maintain strict confidentiality in relation to all projects.

Design Engineering Team Leader Responsibilities

· Monitor all projects involving members of the engineering team in other parts of the world and provide regular progress updates to the Engineering Director.

· Assess the development needs of junior team members and recommend appropriate training, coaching, or other support measures to the Engineering Director.

· Provide on-the-job training sessions to junior engineers to enhance their skills whenever necessary

· Prepare dimensional drawings, installation drawings, and more complex drawings.

· Revise and update existing drawings to reflect design changes and customer requirements.

· Review plans, specifications, and other customer documentation when requested by the Application Engineer or Project Manager.

· Liaise and communicate with Sales Managers, the Engineering Department, and suppliers regarding guidelines for installation drawings that meet or exceed customer requirements.

· Create three-dimensional models and prototypes, produce detailed drawings, assist with tender proposal submissions, and prepare documentation required for product compliance.

· Maintain design notes, calculations, drawings, Bills of Materials, lists of design parameters, performance guarantees, and other relevant documentation for future reference.

· Translate research and design concepts into technical plans and prototypes using computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering software, including Creo and Fusion 360.

· Analyse design proposals and technical information to identify issues arising during product development, then define and implement appropriate solutions that deliver technically feasible designs of high functional and aesthetic quality.

· Attend design reviews to present design ideas and discuss and critique alternative design solutions.

· Prepare cost proposals and support cost-reduction activities while maintaining required design, quality, and performance standards.

· Carry out product simulations for new and prototype projects using in-house software and provide customers with design support and feedback based on the simulation results.

· Analyze and manage multiple design-related issues, identify their root causes, modify the designs accordingly, and repeat testing and analysis until all specification requirements are met.

· Make design changes to existing products.

· Track design changes.

· Maintain control of Bills of Materials, CAD models, and engineering drawings, ensuring that all documents are accurate, current, and appropriately approved.

· Ensure the quality of engineering work by conducting appropriate technical reviews and verifying that deliverables meet project and specification requirements.

· Support process-improvement activities and provide technical guidance to engineering staff and other engineers, as required.

· Perform other duties reasonably related to the role and assigned by management.

· Ensure that all team members understand and comply with applicable company policies.

Reporting and Qualifications

Reporting to: Engineering Director

Qualifications and experience: A relevant engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification, substantial experience in design engineering, advanced proficiency in 3D CAD and CAE software, proven project-management capability, and previous experience leading or mentoring an engineering team.

Automotive experience would be beneficial.

• Key performance expectations include delivering projects to agreed schedules and quality standards, maintaining accurate engineering documentation and Bills of Materials, completing design reviews and approvals promptly, reducing avoidable design revisions, and developing the technical capability of junior engineers.
