About the Role The Design Head shall be responsible for leading and managing the complete Design & Engineering function of the organization. The role involves overseeing conceptual design, detailed engineering, client approvals, engineering calculations, BOM management, design standardization, technical compliance, and coordination with Production, Projects, Procurement, Sales, Quality, and Clients. The incumbent shall ensure timely release of accurate engineering drawings, technical documentation, design calculations, and Bills of Materials while driving innovation, cost optimization, standardization, and continuous improvement across all engineering activities.

Key Responsibilities

A. Design & Engineering Leadership ∙Lead and manage all engineering design activities for ongoing and new projects. ∙Review customer enquiries, specifications, contracts, and purchase orders from an engineering perspective. ∙Approve General Arrangement (GA) Drawings, Fabrication Drawings, Manufacturing Drawings, and Design Calculations. ∙Ensure compliance with customer specifications, applicable codes, standards, and statutory requirements. ∙Establish engineering design standards, procedures, and best practices. ∙Drive innovation and value engineering initiatives for product improvement and cost reduction. ∙Ensure timely completion and release of engineering deliverables.

B. Project Engineering Management ∙Coordinate with Sales and Estimation teams during proposal and quotation stages. ∙Review project requirements and ensure availability of engineering inputs. ∙Ensure timely submission of drawings to clients and consultants for approvals. ∙Monitor engineering milestones and support project execution teams. ∙Manage engineering change requests and design modifications throughout project life cycles. ∙Ensure engineering deliverables are completed within agreed timelines.

C. Team Leadership & Development ∙Lead, supervise, and mentor Design Engineers, Draftsmen, and CAD Modellers. ∙Allocate work among team members based on project priorities. ∙Review team performance and ensure productivity targets are achieved. ∙Develop technical competencies and succession planning within the department. ∙Promote knowledge sharing and continuous technical skill enhancement.

D. Client & Vendor Coordination ∙Act as the primary technical point of contact for key customers. ∙Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and design review meetings. ∙Resolve technical queries raised by customers, consultants, and inspection agencies. ∙Review vendor drawings, datasheets, and engineering submissions. ∙Provide technical recommendations for selection and approval of bought-out items and equipment.

E. Production & Manufacturing Support ∙Ensure smooth transfer of engineering information to Production and Projects departments. ∙Resolve technical and design-related issues during manufacturing and fabrication. ∙Support troubleshooting activities related to production challenges. ∙Minimize rework through accurate engineering and timely clarification of technical queries. ∙Collaborate with Quality and Production teams to improve manufacturing efficiency.

F. Documentation, SAP & ISO Compliance ∙Ensure accurate preparation and approval of Bills of Materials (BOMs) in SAP. ∙Maintain engineering documentation, revision records, calculations, and approval records. ∙Ensure proper document control and traceability. ∙Lead design-related ISO audits and compliance activities. ∙Establish systems for engineering document management and control.

G. Quality, Safety & Continuous Improvement ∙Ensure compliance with engineering standards, quality requirements, and safety regulations. ∙Drive standardization of designs and engineering processes. ∙Lead initiatives focused on productivity improvement and design automation. ∙Promote implementation of design software and digital engineering tools. ∙Support organizational continuous improvement programs.

Candidate Profile Educational Qualification ∙

B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering. ∙M.E. / M.Tech. preferred.

Experience ∙12-15 years of experience in Mechanical Design & Engineering. ∙Minimum 5 years in a leadership or managerial role. ∙Experience in Process Equipment, Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Fabrication, Heavy Engineering, Manufacturing, or EPC industry preferred.
