Overall Purpose of the Role The Controls & Automation Engineer is responsible for supporting the maintenance, development and continuous improvement of the site's industrial control and automation systems. The role ensures the reliability, availability and performance of PLC, HMI, SCADA and associated control systems through technical support, fault finding, programming and commissioning activities. Key Responsibilities Provide technical support for the site's PLC, HMI, SCADA, and industrial control systems, ensuring maximum equipment reliability and plant availability. Carry out fault finding, diagnostics, maintenance, modification, and commissioning of automation systems and associated electrical control equipment. Support the development, testing, implementation, and optimisation of control system software for new and existing plant equipment. Maintain control system documentation, software backups, change records, and technical drawings in accordance with company standards. Implement automation improvement projects, machine upgrades, and commissioning activities while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and machine safety requirements. Provide expert technical support for the operations and maintenance functions. Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures, statutory legislation, and engineering best practice. Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by management. We are looking for someone who has: Strong knowledge and practical experience of Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC systems, including fault finding and programming. Experience with Wonderware/Aveva SCADA systems and Allen-Bradley HMI platforms. Good understanding of industrial control systems, electrical panels, industrial communications, and automation hardware. Practical knowledge of instrumentation and field devices, including sensors, transmitters, valves, motors, variable speed drives, and actuators. Ability to interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation. Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose automation and electrical control system issues. Good understanding of machinery safety, safe systems of work, and engineering standards. Effective communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across IT, Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, contractors, and suppliers. Self-motivated, organised, and capable of managing workload effectively while responding to production priorities. HNC/HND or equivalent qualification and/or experience in Electrical, Electronic, Controls & Automation Engineering. Major investments and project work has already started, including the £50 million installation of our state-of-the-art furnace and de-dusting system. Working in our Projects team will allow you to be involved in the design, development, training and delivery of all our major strategic investments and projects moving forward.
