Overview The Communications Lead at the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA; alliance4water.org) will help increase the accessibility and reach of our work core programs, both within and especially outside of our membership network. The Communications Lead will help organize, run, and summarize events, support written outputs such as blogs and briefing documents, promote new publications and tools, share updates related to our programming through our website and social media platforms like LinkedIn as well as through external engagement with various media outlets. The consultant will also be expected to contribute to strategic communications for AGWA and additional AGWA programmes as needed. The Communications Lead will work directly with and report to the Chief Operating Officer, while regularly interacting with the Executive Director and program leads around communications needs. This will involve regular interactions through email exchanges, video calls, and other means. AGWA’s work is international and collaborative in nature. As such, candidates can expect to interact with people from a wide range of disciplines, geographies, and time zones. The Communications Lead will also provide support for communications across a number of key events, including but not limited to UNFCCC COPs, UN Water Conference, and more. These events may involve high-ranking, stressed, and busy partners requiring sensitive, creative, and formal engagement skills. You will work with others on the AGWA team and beyond to create agendas, select and recruit speakers, handle logistics, stage-manage in some cases, and promote the events. Some international travel may be required. Responsibilities Social Media / Website Management: Develop, implement, and manage social media strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and promote the organization’s initiatives. Monitor and respond to social media interactions, fostering community growth and dialogue across platforms. Draft posts for the Executive Director and other senior staff, as requested. Play a leading role in drafting content for the AGWA and Water Resilience Tracker (WRT) websites in conjunction with an external WRT Comms Officer and AGWA staff support. Event Management: Help plan, coordinate, and execute virtual and in-person events including workshops, conference sessions, webinars, and fundraising activities. Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure all events are impactful, on-brand, and meet objectives. Lead event follow-up, including preparation of video recordings, social media engagement, key messages, and summaries. Written Outputs: Write compelling content for a variety of platforms including website copy, blog posts, newsletters, press releases, funding proposals, and annual reports. Craft messaging that effectively communicates our mission and highlights the impact of our programs. Help design public-facing outputs, including formatting, graphics, and structure as needed in conjunction with program staff. Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists to secure press coverage and foster a positive public image of the organization. Draft and distribute press materials as needed. Monitoring & Reporting: Analyze communications campaigns and social media metrics, using insights to continuously improve strategies. Work with AGWA staff to maintain the importance of communications across all programming, providing advice and requests for materials as needed. Ideal Candidate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in studies related to communications, public relations, journalism, or water management and/or climate policy issues. Familiarity with both water and climate fields is merited. Minimum of 5 years of relevant, full-time work experience related to communications and/or project management, particularly around environment and/or climate issues. Experience with media management, publicity, and direct media engagement is strongly preferred. International experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience communicating and packaging messaging for a wide range of audiences including high-level political representatives, the finance community, civil society groups, and the general public. Ability to communicate across different categories of media and outlets (e.g., social media posts, flyers, press releases). Experience with visual design, writing and editing, and other media production is appreciated. Basic video editing skills (experience with software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, or Canva is a plus) and basic audio editing skills. Experience with design tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar is a plus. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace. Experience with website editing and content posting, especially SquareSpace, is preferred. Candidate must be self-motivated with an ability to handle multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines with shifting priorities. Ability to work effectively remotely and as part of a team. Strong writing and oral presentation skills in English are essential; fluency in other languages an advantage. Willingness to take on flexible work hours as needed for an international work program.
