This unique executive-level position combines legal knowledge, financial strategy, risk management, and business operations to support the organization’s continued success and long-term sustainability. CommuniCare provides specialized services to adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), including cognitive rehabilitation, day programming, and residential support services. The CLFO will play an important role in protecting the organization’s legal and financial interests while supporting efficient operations across its Michigan locations. The ideal candidate will have a law degree (Juris Doctor), with preference given to candidates licensed to practice law in Michigan, and a strong background in business finance, accounting, or financial management. Candidates who have graduated from law school but have not yet passed the bar examination will also be considered, provided they possess the appropriate qualifications and understand the limitations applicable to unlicensed legal professionals. This individual will oversee legal matters in coordination with outside counsel, monitor litigation and claims, assess organizational risks, and provide financial leadership through budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to balance legal and financial priorities in a dynamic healthcare and rehabilitation services environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Legal Oversight & Risk Management - Coordinate and monitor ongoing legal matters, litigation, claims, and disputes involving the organization. - Serve as the primary internal point of coordination for outside legal counsel, insurance representatives, and other relevant parties. - Maintain organized records of legal cases, deadlines, correspondence, filings, and associated expenses. - Assist with legal research, document review, case preparation, and the gathering of relevant records and information. - Monitor the status and financial implications of pending or potential legal claims and communicate relevant updates to executive leadership. - Review business contracts, agreements, policies, and other organizational documents, with appropriate legal review and approval where required. - Identify potential legal, contractual, regulatory, and operational risks and recommend strategies to mitigate exposure. - Maintain strict confidentiality regarding litigation, employee matters, business records, and other sensitive information. Financial Strategy & Executive Leadership - Oversee the organization’s financial operations and develop strategies to promote long-term financial stability and sustainable growth. - Advise executive leadership on financial performance, business risks, resource allocation, and strategic opportunities. - Develop and monitor annual budgets, financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial plans. - Analyze revenue, expenses, operating costs, and financial trends to identify opportunities for improvement. - Evaluate the financial impact of legal claims, settlements, insurance matters, contracts, and other business decisions. - Prepare and present financial reports and recommendations to executive leadership. - Establish financial policies, internal controls, and accountability measures to safeguard organizational resources. Accounting & Business Finance - Oversee accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, financial reconciliations, and month-end and year-end closing processes. - Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial obligations. - Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and maintain the integrity of organizational financial records. - Oversee budget development and expense monitoring across departments, programs, and locations. - Coordinate with external accountants, tax professionals, auditors, financial institutions, and other business partners. - Review payroll-related expenses, employee compensation costs, benefits expenditures, and other significant operating expenses. - Evaluate accounting systems and financial procedures to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities. - Support financial planning for staffing, facilities, insurance, equipment, and organizational growth. Compliance & Organizational Operations - Monitor applicable financial, contractual, and regulatory requirements affecting the organization. - Coordinate with appropriate professionals regarding tax filings, financial audits, insurance requirements, and other compliance obligations. - Collaborate with executive leadership and department managers to evaluate financial performance and operational efficiency. - Assess the financial impact of changes in healthcare regulations, reimbursement arrangements, contractual obligations, and service delivery models. - Develop processes to improve recordkeeping, internal controls, risk identification, and organizational accountability. - Support leadership in evaluating business opportunities, negotiating commercial terms, and assessing financial and legal considerations associated with organizational initiatives. Required Qualifications - Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. - Candidates licensed and in good standing to practice law in Michigan are strongly preferred. Law school graduates who have not yet passed the bar examination will also be considered. - MBA, degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent formal education in business finance is strongly preferred. - Demonstrated knowledge of legal research, document management, contract review, case coordination, or litigation support. - Experience in financial management, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, or business operations. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret legal and financial information. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases, deadlines, financial priorities, and projects simultaneously. - Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and familiarity with financial management and document management systems. - Ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, outside counsel, accountants, insurers, and operational teams. Preferred Qualifications - Active Michigan law license and experience managing business-related legal matters. - MBA, CPA, CMA, or other relevant business or financial credential. - Experience with commercial litigation, insurance claims, employment matters, contract disputes, or corporate risk management. - Experience in healthcare, rehabilitation services, behavioral health, or another regulated industry. - Experience overseeing financial operations for a multi-location organization. - Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement, insurance-based revenue models, and third-party payer arrangements. - Experience evaluating legal expenses, litigation exposure, insurance coverage, and settlement considerations. - Experience developing financial policies, internal controls, and operational improvement initiatives.
