This position will provide executive-level financial leadership, oversee accounting and financial reporting, manage banking and lending relationships, and provide strategic guidance to the ownership and executive leadership team. The CFO will be responsible for ensuring the company maintains strong financial controls, healthy cash flow, accurate financial reporting, and sound financial decision-making while supporting continued growth and long-term business objectives. This is a hands-on leadership position for a financial professional who can move beyond traditional accounting responsibilities and serve as a strategic business partner to the executive team. Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & Strategy - Develop and execute the company's overall financial strategy in partnership with executive leadership - Provide financial guidance and recommendations to the ownership and executive team - Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and long-term financial modeling - Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability, efficiency, and cash flow - Establish and monitor key financial metrics and performance indicators - Analyze financial trends, business performance, and operational results to support strategic decision-making - Evaluate capital needs, investments, major expenditures, and other significant financial decisions - Develop financial models and scenario analyses to support business planning and growth - Provide executive-level reporting and recommendations regarding the company's financial position Accounting & Financial Reporting - Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting - Ensure accurate and timely P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements - Oversee general ledger activity, including preparation and review of journal entries - Review and approve adjusting, accrual, and correcting journal entries - Ensure timely month-end and year-end close - Oversee account reconciliations and financial variance analysis - Maintain appropriate internal controls and financial procedures - Oversee fixed assets and depreciation schedules - Oversee job costing, cost allocation, and project financial performance - Prepare financial packages and analysis for ownership, banks, lenders, and other stakeholders Cash Flow, Banking & Capital Management - Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts and liquidity plans - Manage and strengthen relationships with banks, lenders, and other financial institutions - Monitor debt obligations, loan covenants, and Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) - Evaluate financing options and assist with refinancing and capital structuring - Oversee borrowing, credit facilities, and other financing arrangements - Monitor working capital and optimize cash management - Provide recommendations regarding capital expenditures and major financial commitments Government Contract & Corporate Compliance - Maintain active registration in the System for Award Management (SAM) - Manage renewals and federal contracting eligibility requirements - Maintain UEI and related certifications - Ensure accuracy of representations and certifications - Maintain financial and corporate documentation required for audits and contract reviews - Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local financial requirements - Ensure the company maintains appropriate financial records and documentation for government contracting purposes Tax & Regulatory Compliance - Oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance - Coordinate corporate tax filings and work with outside CPAs and tax advisors - Oversee sales tax, payroll tax, and other required filings - Coordinate financial and tax audits - Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, tax professionals, insurance providers, and other financial advisors - Ensure compliance with applicable Maryland financial and employment-related regulations Payroll & Benefits Oversight This role will provide executive-level oversight of payroll and payroll-related compliance rather than processing weekly payroll. Responsibilities include: - Oversee the accuracy and compliance of W-2, 1099, W-3, 941, and 940 reporting - Review payroll liability reconciliations - Oversee federal, Maryland, and local payroll tax compliance - Coordinate benefits and workers' compensation audits - Ensure appropriate financial controls surrounding payroll and employee-related expenses - Maintain working knowledge of FLSA requirements, exempt/non-exempt classifications, and Maryland wage laws Financial Systems & Technology - Oversee accounting and financial management systems - Evaluate and improve financial processes, controls, and reporting capabilities - Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data across systems - Oversee accounting system integrations and financial reporting tools - Partner with operations and IT to improve financial systems and business processes - Manage financial software subscriptions and related vendor relationships Executive & Organizational Leadership - Serve as a key financial advisor to the ownership and executive leadership team - Translate financial data into clear, actionable business recommendations - Partner with department leaders to establish budgets, monitor performance, and improve financial accountability - Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls - Help establish a financially disciplined, growth-oriented culture throughout the organization - Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel as the company grows Required Qualifications - 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including significant responsibility for financial management and business strategy REQUIRED - Experience in a CFO, VP of Finance, Controller, Director of Finance, or similar senior financial leadership role - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field - Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting - Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and cash flow management - Experience managing banking relationships, financing arrangements, and loan covenants - Strong understanding of DSCR and other financial performance metrics - Experience working directly with ownership, executive leadership, banks, lenders, auditors, and outside advisors - Experience overseeing tax compliance and working with external CPA firms - Strong understanding of internal controls and financial risk management - Experience with government contracting or federal contracting requirements preferred - Advanced Excel proficiency and strong financial analysis skills - Experience with accounting/ERP systems; QuickBooks experience preferred - Strong communication, analytical, organizational, and leadership skills Preferred Qualifications - CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant advanced credential required - Experience with a small to mid-sized privately held company - Experience in a government contracting or manufacturing environment - Experience overseeing financial operations during periods of significant growth - Experience with job costing, project accounting, or contract-based revenue - Experience evaluating financing, capital investment, and business expansion opportunities What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is more than an accounting expert. We are looking for a business-minded financial leader who understands how financial decisions affect operations, profitability, cash flow, growth, and long-term company value. The successful candidate will be comfortable working at both the strategic and operational levels, able to identify financial risks and opportunities, and capable of providing clear, practical recommendations to company leadership.
