Our organization is committed to supporting young people and strengthening the community through programs and services that help students succeed. We are seeking an experienced Nonprofit Accountant to oversee the organization's financial operations, maintain accurate financial records, and ensure responsible stewardship of nonprofit and grant-funded resources. Position Summary The Accountant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting and financial functions of Gateway Youth Outreach. This position requires a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, grant accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a small nonprofit environment where they may manage multiple priorities and funding sources simultaneously. The Accountant must be able to effectively track and manage multiple grants , monitor expenditures against approved budgets, and provide accurate financial information to organizational leadership and the Board of Directors. The Accountant will also present financial reports and updates at Board of Directors meetings four (4) times per year . Reporting Structure & Working Relationships The Accountant reports directly to the Executive Director , who will serve as the Accountant's immediate supervisor. The Accountant will work collaboratively with the following members of the Gateway Youth Outreach team: - Executive Director – Immediate supervisor and primary point of accountability for the position. - Program Director – Collaborates on program budgets, grant expenditures, program-related financial matters, and funding requirements. - Human Resources Manager – Collaborates on personnel-related financial matters, policies, and organizational compliance. - Payroll Specialist – Works closely on payroll accounting, payroll-related reconciliations, employee compensation records, and financial reporting. - Administrative Assistant – The Accountant will directly supervise and provide guidance to the Administrative Assistant as it relates to assigned administrative and financial responsibilities. The Accountant will have one direct report: the Administrative Assistant . This is not a senior management position with responsibility for supervising the broader administrative, program, human resources, or payroll functions. Key Responsibilities - Manage the organization's day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance. - Maintain accurate and organized financial records in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards. - Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for organizational leadership and the Board of Directors. - Present financial information and reports at Board meetings four times per year. - Develop, monitor, and maintain organizational budgets. - Track and reconcile multiple grants and funding sources. - Monitor grant expenditures to ensure spending remains within approved budgets and complies with grant requirements. - Prepare financial reports required by grantors and funding agencies. - Assist with grant budgeting, financial documentation, and grant closeout processes. - Maintain appropriate documentation for restricted and unrestricted funds. - Monitor cash flow and provide management with timely financial information. - Assist with the preparation of annual financial statements and audits. - Work with the organization's independent auditors and provide requested financial documentation. - Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting requirements and financial policies. - Maintain organized records for federal, state, county, town, and private grant funding. - Identify potential financial issues or discrepancies and communicate them promptly to the Executive Director. - Assist leadership with financial planning, forecasting, and decision-making. - Work collaboratively with the Program Director, Human Resources Manager, and Payroll Specialist on matters that affect the organization's financial operations. - Supervise the Administrative Assistant and provide direction regarding assigned administrative and financial support duties. - Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and organizational information. - Perform other accounting and financial duties as needed. Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. - Prior experience working as an accountant for a nonprofit organization is required. - Demonstrated experience managing and accounting for multiple grants and funding sources . - Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial reporting. - Experience with budgeting, account reconciliation, financial statements, and audit preparation. - Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. - Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a small nonprofit environment. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial staff, leadership, and Board members. - Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel. - Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound financial judgment. Preferred Qualifications Experience with funding and financial requirements involving: - New York State funding - Nassau County funding - Town of Hempstead funding - Government grants and contracts - Foundation and private grants - Restricted and unrestricted nonprofit funding - Grant compliance and financial reporting Experience working with organizations that receive funding from multiple governmental and private sources is strongly preferred. Board & Organizational Engagement The Accountant will play an important role in helping the Board of Directors understand the organization's financial position. The Accountant will be expected to prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Directors four (4) times annually , answer financial questions, and provide clear explanations of budgets, grant activity, and organizational financial performance.
