Our organization already has an established accounting team responsible for day-to-day bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and other accounting functions. The CFO will be responsible for independently overseeing and evaluating the accounting department, verifying the accuracy and integrity of financial records, identifying financial discrepancies and potential irregularities, and ensuring the company's financial resources are properly managed and protected. This is a hands-on executive leadership position requiring both strategic financial expertise and strong investigative accounting skills. The ideal candidate must be capable of reviewing financial transactions in detail, identifying weaknesses in existing accounting processes, implementing corrective measures, and providing the Owner/CEO with transparent, accurate, and actionable financial insights. We are looking for a professional who can serve as a trusted financial advisor to ownership while maintaining strong financial accountability across the organization. Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Oversight & Accounting Supervision - Oversee and independently review all financial and accounting operations performed by the existing accounting department. - Verify the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of financial records, transactions, and supporting documentation. - Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Statements. - Supervise and evaluate general ledger activities, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end/year-end closing processes. - Review Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) to ensure accurate recording, billing, collections, and payments. - Monitor outstanding customer balances, overdue receivables, vendor liabilities, and working capital. - Review bank statements, bank reconciliations, credit card transactions, and cash management activities. - Evaluate payroll, employee reimbursements, corporate expenses, and other financial disbursements. - Ensure the accounting department follows established financial policies, procedures, and approval requirements. Internal Auditing, Fraud Prevention & Risk Management - Conduct independent internal financial reviews and risk-based audits to evaluate the accuracy and integrity of accounting operations. - Identify accounting errors, duplicate payments, unauthorized transactions, unusual expenses, and potential fraudulent activities. - Investigate financial discrepancies and irregular transactions, documenting findings and recommending appropriate corrective actions. - Verify vendor invoices, purchase orders, expense reimbursements, and payment authorization records. - Examine financial processes to identify control weaknesses, operational inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement. - Develop and strengthen internal financial controls, approval procedures, and fraud-prevention measures. - Monitor financial activities for compliance with company policies and applicable financial regulations. - Establish accountability measures to ensure financial transactions are properly documented, approved, and recorded. - Coordinate with external auditors, tax professionals, and legal advisors when necessary. - Report significant financial concerns or suspected misconduct directly to the Owner/CEO. Financial Strategy, Budgeting & Planning - Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with the company's operational objectives and long-term growth plans. - Lead annual budgeting, financial forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial performance analysis. - Analyze revenue, operating expenses, profitability, and cost structures to identify opportunities for improvement. - Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, explaining material variances. - Evaluate major expenditures, capital investments, financing arrangements, and business expansion opportunities. - Recommend strategies to improve profitability, strengthen cash reserves, reduce financial risks, and optimize working capital. - Oversee banking relationships, financing requirements, and cash management strategies. - Provide executive leadership with financial recommendations to support informed business decisions. Compliance, Tax & Financial Governance - Ensure accurate financial reporting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). - Oversee compliance with applicable federal, state, and local financial reporting and tax requirements. - Coordinate corporate tax planning, tax return preparation, and required filings with internal or external tax professionals. - Ensure financial records are properly maintained and available for regulatory reviews and audits. - Establish and enforce financial governance policies, including segregation of duties, authorization limits, and appropriate oversight of company expenditures. - Maintain strict confidentiality of financial, banking, employee, and business information. Leadership & Direct Reporting to Ownership - Report directly to the Owner/CEO, providing independent financial oversight and executive-level recommendations. - Manage, supervise, and evaluate the performance of the existing accounting and finance team. - Establish clear reporting standards, financial accountability, and performance expectations. - Provide weekly financial updates highlighting cash position, receivables, payables, unusual transactions, and urgent financial concerns. - Prepare comprehensive monthly financial reports covering profitability, cash flow, financial risks, budget performance, and operational improvements. - Clearly communicate financial discrepancies, potential risks, and recommended corrective actions to ownership. - Ensure identified accounting issues are investigated, resolved, and prevented from recurring. - Serve as the primary financial advisor to the Owner/CEO on financial operations, investments, and strategic business decisions. Required Qualifications - Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is mandatory. - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. - Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive professional experience in accounting, auditing, financial management, or corporate finance. - At least 3–5 years of experience in a senior financial leadership position, such as CFO, VP of Finance, Finance Director, Corporate Controller, or equivalent. - Strong experience overseeing accounting departments and reviewing the work of accounting professionals. - Extensive knowledge of financial statements, general ledger accounting, AP, AR, payroll, and bank reconciliations. - Demonstrated experience in internal auditing, financial controls, risk management, and financial discrepancy investigations. - Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, accounting standards, and applicable financial reporting requirements. - Proven ability to develop financial strategies, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections. - Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems. - Excellent analytical, problem-solving, investigative, and decision-making skills. - Strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities. - High level of professional integrity, discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail. - Ability to independently identify financial problems and recommend practical solutions. Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or an MBA. - Previous experience as a CFO or senior financial executive in a privately owned company. - Background in public accounting, internal audit, forensic accounting, or financial investigations. - Experience working directly with business owners, founders, or executive leadership. - Experience in logistics, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing, or related industries. - Familiarity with multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidated financial reporting. - Experience implementing accounting systems, improving financial processes, and strengthening corporate governance. What We Are Looking For We are not seeking a traditional bookkeeper or someone whose primary responsibility is entering transactions into accounting software. We are looking for a hands-on, CPA-qualified Chief Financial Officer who can independently assess the company's financial position, oversee the accounting department, identify mistakes and irregularities, prevent financial losses, and establish strong financial controls. The successful candidate must be equally comfortable examining individual financial transactions, reviewing accounting records, leading the finance team, and advising ownership on major financial decisions. This position requires direct accountability to the Owner/CEO, exceptional financial judgment, and the ability to provide an unbiased and accurate assessment of the company's financial health.
