About Action Against Abuse
Action Against Abuse (AAA) is a registered charity dedicated to supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse (DA) who are navigating the Family Court system as litigants in person. We help clients access legal protection by supporting them to obtain protective injunctions, including Non-Molestation Orders, through the Family Courts. Our work aims to safeguard individuals and their families, providing them with the protection, reassurance and opportunity they need to rebuild their lives free from abuse.
AAA are already a leading force in the sector, but we recognise that there is more to do to create positive change and help those whose lives are being affected by DA and their families, live in a peaceful, calm and safe environment. The work we do provides them with peace and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
The Role
We are seeking a visionary, strategic and compassionate Chief Executive Officer to lead AAA into its next phase of development. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader who is passionate about ending domestic abuse, empowering survivors and driving meaningful, lasting change.
The CEO will have overall accountability for the charity’s performance, including its financial sustainability, operational effectiveness, governance, regulatory compliance, service delivery, workforce and organisational development. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, the CEO will provide strategic leadership, ensure strong organisational management and translate the charity’s mission into measurable outcomes for the people we support.
The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of AAA’s strategic plan, ensuring that our services remain effective, accessible, trauma-informed and responsive to the needs of our clients. They will identify opportunities for growth, innovation and service improvement while maintaining the highest standards of safeguarding, accountability and client care.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop, implement and regularly review the charity’s strategic plan, setting clear priorities, measurable objectives and performance targets to maximise impact and support sustainable growth.
- Financial Sustainability and Fundraising: Lead financial planning, budget management and income generation. Identify, develop, pitch for and secure public funding, grants and other income opportunities to strengthen the charity’s long-term financial resilience.
- Governance and Compliance: Work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure effective governance, statutory and regulatory compliance, sound risk management and transparent reporting.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee service delivery, ensuring that support for clients seeking protective injunctions is safe, effective, high-quality and client focused. Identify and mitigate operational and service delivery risks.
- People and Culture: Lead, inspire and develop a diverse team of paid staff and volunteers, fostering a culture that is kind, inclusive, compassionate, open, empowering and trauma informed.
- Partnerships and External Profile: Raise AAA’s profile across the domestic abuse, legal, charitable and public sectors. Build and leverage strategic partnerships to extend the charity’s reach, influence policy and practice.
- Change and Development: Ensure the charity evolves in response to new practices, emerging needs and opportunities.
Essential Experience and Qualifications
- A recognised qualification as an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA).
- Frontline experience supporting clients at civil court, with extensive practical experience preparing protective injunction applications, specifically Non-Molestation Orders.
- A minimum of three years’ experience working within the charity sector.
- Proven experience leading and delivering substantial organisational change.
- Strong business planning, financial management and risk management skills, including service delivery risk.
- A demonstrable track record of setting and achieving strategic and operational targets.
- Proven track record of strategic business development within the non-profit or public sector, with clear evidence of diversifying income streams (e.g., corporate partnerships, social enterprise, major donors, or commercial contracts) to reduce reliance on statutory funding and grant cycles, ensuring long-term financial sustainability.
- Excellent leadership, communication, relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
Our Ideal Candidate
Above all, our new CEO will be a values-driven leader who combines strategic vision with practical expertise, sound judgement and genuine compassion. They will ensure survivors are treated with dignity, respect and fairness, empower staff and volunteers, and build the partnerships and resources needed to increase AAA’s impact.
This is an opportunity to lead a committed organisation, strengthen its foundations and help more individuals and families move towards safety, stability and a future free from domestic abuse.
