We have a 6,000 sq ft showroom, a furniture warehouse that is something of a legend in our industry, and the largest decked outdoor tent display in the country — more than 160 tents pitched at the height of the season. It is a big, busy, seasonal site. Spring and summer are relentless; winter is when we reset, retrain and plan. Running it well takes a strong management team, and we are looking for the second in command. The role As Assistant Retail Manager you are the Retail Manager’s right hand and their deputy when they are not here. You will run trading days, lead and develop the team on shift, and take ownership of the operational detail that keeps a store of this size working — stock, standards, rotas, compliance and cash. You will spend most of your time on the shop floor rather than behind a desk. Expect to be serving customers, resolving the awkward query, re-pitching a display after a busy weekend and coaching a new starter through their first week — often in the same shift. What you’ll be doing - Deputising for the Retail Manager, taking full responsibility for the store in their absence - Opening and closing the store as a key holder, including alarm, cash and security procedures - Leading the team on shift — briefing, allocating work, setting the pace and keeping standards up - Supporting recruitment, induction, training and day-to-day coaching of team members - Helping to build fair, workable rotas that cover trade and give the team the notice they deserve - Driving sales and conversion through product knowledge, display standards and customer service - Overseeing deliveries, stock accuracy, replenishment, stock counts and shrinkage control - Maintaining showroom, warehouse and outdoor display standards across a large site - Handling cash, banking, reconciliation and till reporting accurately - Owning health and safety, fire, manual handling and store compliance routines day to day - Resolving customer complaints and escalations calmly and fairly - Working with the Retail Manager on seasonal planning, promotions and store performance What we’re looking for - Supervisory or assistant management experience in retail, hospitality or a similar customer-facing environment - Confidence leading a team on shift — setting direction, giving feedback and holding standards - Sound commercial judgement and comfort with sales figures, stock reports and KPIs - Well organised, with the ability to keep several plates spinning on a busy trading day - A hands-on approach — this is a leading-from-the-front role, not a back-office one - Sound understanding of health and safety and cash handling procedures, or the willingness to learn them quickly - Availability to work weekends and bank holidays as part of the management rota - Comfortable with practical, physical work, including lifting and time spent outdoors in all weathers - Product knowledge of camping or caravanning is welcome but not essential — we will train you What we offer - £26,000 - £27,500 per annum, reviewed annually - A permanent, full-time contract with a published management rota - Full product training across our ranges, plus support to develop your leadership skills - Generous staff discount on the kit we sell - Workplace pension, 28 days’ paid holiday (including bank holidays) and free on-site parking - The chance to help shape how the flagship store runs, rather than just following someone else’s plan Hours and rota This is a 37.5-hour contract worked on a management rota, which includes weekend and bank holiday working shared with the Retail Manager. Store opening hours are 9.00am–5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am–4.30pm on Sunday, with additional time either side of trading for opening, closing and handover. Our peak season runs from spring through to the end of the summer holidays, and the rota reflects that.
