About the Role Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Fitness Manager – Operations & Member Experience to join our team. This is a hands-on leadership role, supporting the Head of Health & Fitness with the day-to-day running of the fitness facilities, leading the team on shift and maintaining high standards of member service. You will lead by example, remaining visible and active across the fitness areas – engaging with members, supporting the team, maintaining standards and ensuring the gym operates safely and effectively. A key focus will be member engagement and retention, ensuring members feel welcomed, supported and valued throughout their membership. Key Responsibilities · Lead the fitness team on shift, setting expectations and maintaining high standards of service and professionalism. · Maintain a visible, proactive and approachable presence across all fitness areas. · Ensure members are actively met, greeted and engaged with, and that agreed member follow-ups are completed. · Build strong member relationships and support agreed member retention and engagement objectives. · Work closely with the front desk and wider club team to provide a joined-up member experience. · Regularly patrol all fitness areas, ensuring high standards of safety, cleanliness, presentation and member behaviour. · Manage gym access control, ensuring facilities are used by appropriately authorised members and guests. · Support the management of teen memberships, including inductions, access requirements, safe gym use and conduct. · Deliver gym inductions, exercise programmes and fitness classes as required. · Provide ongoing fitness support, motivation and guidance to members. · Assist with the management of the fitness class timetable and instructors. · Carry out equipment and facility checks and ensure maintenance issues are reported promptly. · Maintain and help update fitness department SOPs, ensuring agreed procedures and standards are consistently followed. · Support the Head of Health & Fitness with team development and the smooth running of the department. · Deputise for the Head of Health & Fitness when required. Essential Requirements · Recognised Level 3 Personal Training qualification. · Recognised class delivery qualifications. · Experience working within a gym, health club or fitness environment. · Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. · A genuine passion for fitness and delivering an excellent member experience. · Confidence to lead a team, set standards and address issues when required. · A proactive, hands-on approach and willingness to take ownership. · Good knowledge of exercise prescription, gym equipment and safe training practices. · Flexibility to work evenings and weekends. · First aid qualification Desirable · Previous supervisory, senior instructor or team leader experience. · Experience within a membership-based sports or health club. · Experience of member retention and engagement initiatives. · Experience working with teen/junior gym members. What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who can lead from the floor, not from an office. You will be energetic, approachable and comfortable taking responsibility for the fitness operation when on shift. You will set the standard through your own behaviour – engaging with members, supporting colleagues, maintaining the facility and making sure things get done. Above all, you will understand that excellent member experience drives member retention. Personal Training Opportunity The role provides the opportunity to develop your own Personal Training client base at the Club. Personal Training may be undertaken within agreed working hours on a limited basis, as well as outside contracted hours. Any Personal Training undertaken during working hours must be within agreed limits and must not compromise the core responsibilities of the role, team leadership or member service.
