Our charts combine bathymetry, shaded relief, imagery, navigation information, and other marine data to help users better understand the seafloor and navigate offshore waters. We are developing a mobile application that will bring CMOR charts to iOS and Android devices. We are looking for a mobile application developer to build, deploy, and maintain that product. The Role The Mobile Application Developer will own the software side of the CMOR mobile app, from technical architecture and map rendering through deployment and ongoing maintenance. The developer will work directly with CMOR’s Senior Cartographer, who will produce the source chart data and define its symbology, labeling, layer hierarchy, zoom behavior, and geographic coverage. The developer will be responsible for converting that data into mobile-ready formats and building the application that displays and delivers it. CMOR currently has an early prototype built with React Native and Expo. The developer will evaluate the existing work and determine the appropriate architecture for the production application. Responsibilities Build, release, and maintain the CMOR application for iOS and Android. Develop the interactive chart viewer, GPS functionality, chart selection, downloads, and offline storage. Create a repeatable process for converting CMOR’s raster and vector GIS data into mobile-ready chart packages. Work with the Senior Cartographer to implement required symbology, labels, layers, and zoom behavior. Optimize map rendering, downloads, storage, and offline performance for large chart datasets. Build the supporting services needed to distribute, update, and manage chart content. Test the application across supported devices and manage releases through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Maintain source control, build instructions, and essential technical documentation. Qualifications Professional experience developing and releasing mobile applications. Experience with React Native and Expo, or comparable native or cross-platform mobile technologies. Experience with interactive mapping, tiled imagery, or other large data-heavy visual applications. Understanding of mobile storage, networking, performance, testing, and release management. Experience taking an application through Apple App Store or Google Play deployment. Ability to work independently and communicate technical decisions clearly. Preferred Experience GIS, marine mapping, or nautical-chart application development. MapLibre, Mapbox, or another mobile map-rendering framework. Raster and vector tiles, offline maps, GPS, and geospatial data-processing tools such as GDAL. Mobile content delivery, chart updates, user accounts, or in-app purchases. Contract and Compensation $65,000–$85,000 annual contract compensation, depending on experience. Full-time 1099 independent contractor engagement. Up to two weeks of planned paid time away (year 1) included in the contract. Pay: $65,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year Benefits: Flexible schedule Paid holidays Paid sick time Paid time off Work from home Language: English (Required) Work Location: Hybrid remote in Tequesta, FL 33469
